I think the tax is per gallon, not a percentage of the selling price.

Like I said. If gas drops to $1.50 a gallon the feds and the states will add enough tax to bring it back up to $3.50 a gallon or so. California complained that the electric cars weren’t using enough gas and the state was loosing gas tax revenue.

Some states have sales tax on top of per/gal taxes.

I think the tax is per gallon, not a percentage of the selling price. Connecticut has some gas taxation based on price 'Gross Receipt Tax' on wholesale They 'capped' it in 2012 to $3/gal levels but the percentage can keep going up and up... http://www.nhregister.com/general-news/20120328/connecticut-house-senate-unanimously-pass-gas-tax-cap-5 MA just initiated a gas tax hooked to inflation, automatically, without any legislature vote. It's being fought - we'll see http://www.masslive.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/10/republicans_in_massachusetts_a.html All this on top of the regular 'ole gas taxes.
