What about former Sen. Gordon Smith? He wasn’t a movement conservative but seemed to be pretty decent. Would he run again?

I haven’t heard anything about Smith in ages. I don’t think the rank and file would look kindly on his stepping forward. Considering we’re in a blue state, there are lots of Tea Party Republicans at the county level. Smith was willing to work closely with Wyden, and that means moving to the left.
