A lot of them probably act out what was done to them as children, too dumb and/or screwed up in the head to figure out some other way to deal with the issue.
The bible refers to this as generational sin.

Too often we think only or even chiefly in terms of punishment. Liberals actually had the right idea with rehab. They had the wrong source, however, which was man’s philosophy.
