A study of how older teenagers use social media has found that Facebook is not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried and is being replaced by simpler social networks such as Twitter and Snapchat, an expert has claimed.
Young people now see the site as uncool and keep their profiles live purely to stay in touch with older relations, among whom it remains popular.
Prof Daniel Miller of University College London, an anthropologist who worked on the European Union-funded research, wrote in an article for the academic news website The Conversation: Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it.
This year marked the start of what looks likely to be a sustained decline of what had been the most pervasive of all social networking sites...
The Global Social Media Impact Study observed those aged 16 to 18 in eight countries for 15 months and found that Facebook use was in sharp decline.
It found young people were turning to simpler services such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp, which Prof Miller conceded were no match for Facebook in terms of functionality.
Most of the schoolchildren in our survey recognised that in many ways, Facebook is technically better than Twitter or Instagram. It is more integrated, better for photo albums, organising parties and more effective for observing peoples relationships, said Prof Miller, adding that slick isnt always best in attracting young users.
WhatsApp has overtaken Facebook as the number one way to send messages, said the researchers, while Snapchat has gained in popularity in recent months by allowing users to send images which self-destruct after a short period on the recipients phone in order to maintain privacy....

Facebook is useless to small business now. I play in a band and it was a very usefull tool for us in the begining, but it hasn’t been for some time now. They classify the type of site you have and if you are a business/band/etc they automatically restrict the number of your own fans/followers that can see your updates in their feed.
For example, if I have 12,000 fans and I release a new video, in the past I would post the new release on my profile and all 12,000 fans would see the information. About a year ago they changed that. Now if I post the same information it is visable to about 600 people. Then I get a message from Facebook telling me how much I need to pay them in order to boost the visibililty of that post.
The cost simply isn’t worth it to me. These people are fans that have previously chosen to follow my band for the sole purpose of getting information about us. Meaning that they are customers already to a degree. If I’m going to shell out cash for an add campain I’m going to spend that money to find NEW customers.
The good old days of computing were when you had to be knowledgeable and intelligent in computing to be a member.

LOL. FRiends don’t let friends do DOS.
Our daughter and her daughter (13) got into a huge row when daughter discovered that granddaughter had, against orders, put Facebook on her new smart phone. Sort of ruined Christmas party for my daughter. My granddaughter had a great time. Oh well.
I don’t blame the kids. I feel the same way. I used FB exclusively to post conservative political links, but no way would I use it seriously. I even gave up with the political stuff. FB kept changing things ALL the time, imposing more and more unchangeable usage methodologies and more and more unfathomable “security” settings. Basically, FB ran off all their users with their massive BS.
Facebook? Nobody goes there any more, it’s too crowded.
When fb started it was for college students only - users needed an “.edu” email account to verify. There was a small amount of trust as students reached out to colleagues at their institutions. When fb opened accessibility to anyone it lost focus. Now its struggling to define its identity.
I (still) use WinXP not as matter of pride but because I'm familiar with it and it does everything I need a PC to do. That makes me a loon? Methinks the loons are the ones that need the newest, 'bestest' every few months or so...

Sorry to have to break bad news, but XP is going to be End-of-Lifed this next April 8. There won’t be any more security updates.
Most PCs that run XP won’t be able to upgrade to the latest Windows 7 or 8. They will run a distribution of Linux just fine.
Twitter stock drop 13% on friday.
Perfect! I know what you mean. And it’s never the relatives you like the best.
Buy Windows 7 Home edition then go to http://wincustomize.com and get an XP theme....if you can locate one as there are 521 screens x 9 thumbnails of themes to choose from!
Found XP Professional III

(A) You have to pay to have your content seen by those customers/fans who are already following you (3 views for a post vs. 600-900 if you pay $5 a throw). This is just to reach people who've already given consent to SEE your promotions.
(B) I've been noticing a trend the past month where profile photos (of suspects or deceased persons) appear in a news item with a "(c) Facebook" credit attributed to the photo. Facebook damn well doesn't own those photos (at least to hear those who lash out anytime someone points out the horrific language in the "copyright changes" in Facebook's user policies).
IF Facebook is going to license such images for news articles, no creator should post ANY original content to Facebook. It is NOT pro-"small business".
After reading this, my wife who blogs about YA stuff said she were surprised by no mention of tumbler or reddit. Tumbler used to state your personal interests on multi sites and it can be anonymous. Reddit is used for entertainment and breaking news . She also agreed the article was 3 or 4 years behind the times.
yeah, "let's kill more babies" just doesn't come across on twitter like you would think. /s
I joined FB at my daughter’s encouragement. Use it only as a means to share our live long distance now. She is not on twitter but I am. LOL
Thanks for the heads-up, but I've known for a while that XP support is being phased out by MS. In a corporate environment, that is certainly the death-knell. Right here on this private PC - who cares? At least XP has 12 years of security upgrades under its belt by this time (7 and 8 are just starting their journey down that rocky road...) - of course, it's anyone's guess why the major global OS still needs security updates 12 years on...whatever.
My surfing radius is limited to known websites, I don't open unknown email attachments, etc. - just the usual common sense measures. I even deactivated the antivirus anchor last year - no loss, unless you keep buying into the fear-mongering.
When the current PC stops meeting my requirements or just breaks down, I'll "upgrade." Until then - FMCDH!
Addendum: Seems like the newer OS’s are ever more intrusive as regards DRM - MS wants to decide what of my extensive music/film collection I’m able to access - no thanks!
