Jobless Benefits Halt May Be Key Issue in Midterms
RCP ^ | 12/28/2013 | By Alexis Simendinger

If lawmakers decide next month to end a high-stakes impasse over extending long-term unemployment insurance benefits that expired Saturday, an estimated 1.3 million jobless Americans may receive compensation for three additional months or longer.

However, in allowing the federal benefits to lapse this weekend -- after extending the support 11 times since the recession of 2008 -- Congress may have severed help to nearly 5 million people by the end of 2014, according to the Obama administration.

The battle has become the starter’s pistol of the midterm election year, pitting Democrats’ belief that the benefits are necessary and help buoy a still-wobbly economy, against Republican arguments that growth and hiring would gain strength more quickly if Washington keeps its spigot turned off and leaves unemployment compensation to the states.

Recent polling suggests Democrats have the stronger argument with the public across regions, genders and age groups. A majority of voters say they want Congress and the president to maintain the benefits, according to a survey of 811 registered voters conducted Dec. 18-22 by Hart Research Associates. The poll found that 55 percent of voters think the federal emergency program should continue, while 34 percent say benefits should cease.

The way this congress behaves I fully expect them to ‘make a deal’ where by unemployment weeks are extended in exchange for vets benefits to be restored. Don’t be shocked when it happens

That deal was probably already made before the first deal was made. I don't trust either side anymore.

67 percent say delay Obamacare, 53 percent would vote to repeal it

RATS still don't have the numbers.

Bring back American jobs.

Just saying...

Stop exporting American jobs. Stop sending American jobs all over the globe, and bring them back HOME.

Hire Americans.

Now.

It may sound harsh but I totally agree with this. I’d wash dishes if I had to. No way I’m losing my house. Period.

That’s Obama’s base right there, sitting on their ass, playing XBOX all day, refusing to get out and work..waiting for the mail to come so they can get their unemployment benefits and food stamps, then use the money to go by a PS4

Make it the lack of jobs caused by Bammy’s War on America.

Are you reading this, GOP?

I hope you are, because this is the truthful and correct counter to anything the left tries to espouse regarding unemployment benefits.

The best benefit that the unemployed could receive is a JOB!

The hugely unpopular Obamacare (not ACA) program, and the uncertainty behind it is one of the major reasons that employers are hesitant, and even unable to create JOBS.

Obama's refusal to allow the Keystone Pipeline and other energy initiatives to go forward is another reason we have a shortage of JOBS.

Many more of Obama's leftist policies and regulations can be directly tied to the lack of JOBS.

President Obama's War on JOBS.

This is King Barry’s answer to the outrage caused by 0bamacare.. Using the extension of unemployment as a wedge issue for the 2014 midterms. Surprise surprise NOT!!!

Why wouldn't he? Anything that gets Obamacare out of the headlines he's going to jump on.

I talked with a gentleman the other day waiting for his accountant to duck his taxes. His accountant claims to be an intimate with Obama with emails, claimed to be the inventor of the cash for clunkers program. Looked sleazy I might add.
They believe in Obamacare. Think the white people are going down and black and brown are on the rise. Then they talk about economics like they are playing monopoly.

This kind of talk can spin your head, but all I can say is, “How do we present our common sense and convince people when they may have such limited, racist and hateful thinking”?
PLUS, we have lost pride in ourselves and replaced it with both ego and a lack of shame regarding our people in general.
WE ARE IN TROUBLE.

What? The Liberals on TV keep repeating how much the economy is improving. These people should be able to find jobs, right?

They don't mind spending 6 billion in 3 months for this welfare program and they figure they'll find the money from someplace because they want the votes. On the other hand, they insist they have to squeeze 6 billion out of military retiree pay (over 10 years) but there is no money available for that and besides Liberals don't give a sh#t about those votes.

So, who and what do we believe?

Call the bluff and make common people understand the money has to come from somewhere:

Extend unemployment for an entire year but treat it like a student loan. The money MUST be paid back. Heck, make it interest free-what could the dems or MSM say then?

Every time I look at a photo of Americans lined up at the unemployment office, I am struck by the fact that these people are clearly overfed. By the way, when a couple (with 2 kids) qualifies for unemployment AND all the other goodies: food stamps, shelter subsidies, etc., they can actually come pretty close to living comfortably. One young couple I know managed a high-end vacation for the whole family plus a Caribbean cruise for the adults later in the year. The mom (in her 30’s) then found a questionable way to “get on disability.” We offered him some part-time work, but he “didn't have time.”

The lack of opportunity should be the number one issue.

Bingo!

We can argue whether a Federal extension should be granted, but I suspect this issue is another being promoted by big government types to divide and conquer Conservatives. Given this, it seems to me that rather than blaming victims of this economy, we should be focusing on the cause....the rulers (both “D” and “R”) in Washington.

I’ve sworn-off Limbaugh, but he did make an important point a while back—Unemployment in the era of Obama doesn’t hurt.

People are still eating, they have their cars, they have their cell phones, they have their TVs—Nobody has had to give up anything, or economize, as they have in the past because the government keeps handing them money.

Continuing this scam is essential to the Democrats; otherwise people are going to be royally pi$$ed when they actually have to start sacrificing.

Lumber, coal, gas, oil....we have it all.

That we do. And unlike communists, we can keep "harvesting" those resources for decades to come while American's do what they do best, invent and innovate. Beyond that, we COULD be buying what we do today for pennies on the dollar and leaving the rest of the world in the dust AND keeping our freeloaders fat and happy if only the freaking federal government and the socialists/communists in this country would get the hell out of the way.

After the collapse is when we'll have to do it since DC seems hell bent on this destructive path.

I believe it is 26 weeks for state, then the Fed kicks in. Either way, it is government creating these conditions they are selling the sheeple the idea they are solving.

I was laid off last year for a couple months and for the first time in my life, applied for un-employment. Did I truly need it? Nope. Not one cent of it but it helped paying energy bills with much comfort (and I liked the idea of my former employer having to pay in). I was "required" to go to a few classes while I was on said un-employment (meanwhile just waiting on my background checks to clear for my new position). The "classes" on finding new employment always seemed to divert into how to apply for more "aide" and "benefits" (and extending current bene's) and little in the way of an actual constructive way off the dole. If the people in those "classes" spent as much energy into finding work instead of how to game the systems they would be surprised how well the could actually do in life free from some "agency overlord". But I guess some people are born to be serf's is the best I could conclude and politicians love those assholes.
