The quiet, final hour of Mack Brown's tenure

The final moments of Mack Brown’s career at Texas were neither triumphant nor tearful. Just quiet.

He walked off the Alamodome field surrounded by noise but not saying a word. He gathered his team for his final locker room speech. And one hour later, he was gone.

He left the building as Texas’ former head coach, his hellish 16th season finally complete with a 30-7 loss to No. 10 Oregon in the Valero Alamo Bowl. And there was unmistakable finality to this.

Mack Brown congratulates QB Case McCoy after a first-half TD, but little else went right for Brown and the Horns in his final game as Texas coach. He lost his last game in burnt orange in many of the same ways Texas lost four other games in 2013. His quarterbacks struggled, a slim margin of error killed by two interceptions for Oregon touchdowns. The run game couldn’t win all by itself. The defense fared admirably but couldn’t shut down Marcus Mariota.

“I thought they tried as hard as they could tonight,” Brown said. “We played a really good football team. I thought that quarterback looked like one I saw play for us a while back.”

A once-great program that now has no on-field identity and few discernable advantages lost to a powerhouse. This, quite simply, was why Brown’s time is finished.

Much of the fan base bolted to the exits in the middle of the fourth quarter. Those who stayed did so to chant and clap for their coach.

When it was over, Brown did what he always did: He walked to the sideline and threw up the horns as “The Eyes of Texas” blared. As the cameras and reporters engulfed him, he could barely see the band.

The bubble had already burst for Mack when his aura of being "A Great Recruiter" went away after dismissing two Heisman Trophy winners in Manziel and Griffin who grew up in his back yard.

Texas's chief problem since reaching the pinnacle of the National Championship game in 2010 was how to replace its leader Colt McCoy.

He had it right in front of him and decided to pass.

Add that Jameis Winston this year’s Heisman said he wanted to be a Longhorn and wasn’t even offered a visit sealed his deal. Texas booster say they have more money than anyone but the Vatican , say hello to Florida State’s Jimbo Fischer as the next Texas coach.

Bobby Bowden should be rested and ready and he has a great record.

Rumor has Penn State’s Bill O’Brien going to Texas. Then again one of PSU’s top recruits says that “BoB” told him otherwise in a phone call.

Thank you for that accurate statement. It is sickening to hear all of the announcers falling all over themselves in worship of Mack Brown! They continue to repeat and highlight his wins (with a HUGE number of them over the pre-conference push-overs), but don’t mention his many FAILURES.

Bottom line - Mack won ONLY TWO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 16 YEARS!!! No one seems to mention that pathetic and unacceptable record. Mack evolved into a glad handing politician and a thin skinned coach when it came to any criticism. He frittered away talent and didn’t have the first clue about developing said talent!

Did Mack do good things to get the program back on track at Texas when he got there? Yes, of course he did - and no one can take that away from him. Is he a nice guy? Most say he is. But the man is not a great coach. Records have a funny way of speaking for themselves and Mack’s caught up with him. Two conference championships in SIXTEEN YEARS is the bottom line - not bundling victories over tiny schools and crowing about your win record! I’m delighted he’s gone!

Lucky for t.u. Mariota didn’t have leg cramps in the 2nd half, and thus wasn’t running...otherwise it might have been 50-7..

Mack won as many National Titles as Gene Chizik (where is he now?), with a once in a generation quarterback in Vince Young.

A superman qb can certainly help any coach.
Drew Brees at Purdue was a welcome boost for Joe Tiller.

I agree. But when are you Ags gonna give up your juvenile “tu” reference? It’s as pathetic as Mack Brown’s conference championship record.

Yes but even at age 84 given the mega-millions big schools are paying now, he might interview, LOL.

Interesting game. I knew Oregon was good, but I expected a closer finish. Texas really got whupped.

So tomorrow you’ll continue the practice on Jan 1st - ha, ha. That sounds strangely like an MSNBC announcement after they get caught insulting someone. But those antics are very typical of aTm.
