The final moments of Mack Browns career at Texas were neither triumphant nor tearful. Just quiet.
He walked off the Alamodome field surrounded by noise but not saying a word. He gathered his team for his final locker room speech. And one hour later, he was gone.
He left the building as Texas former head coach, his hellish 16th season finally complete with a 30-7 loss to No. 10 Oregon in the Valero Alamo Bowl. And there was unmistakable finality to this.
Mack Brown congratulates QB Case McCoy after a first-half TD, but little else went right for Brown and the Horns in his final game as Texas coach. He lost his last game in burnt orange in many of the same ways Texas lost four other games in 2013. His quarterbacks struggled, a slim margin of error killed by two interceptions for Oregon touchdowns. The run game couldnt win all by itself. The defense fared admirably but couldnt shut down Marcus Mariota.
I thought they tried as hard as they could tonight, Brown said. We played a really good football team. I thought that quarterback looked like one I saw play for us a while back.
A once-great program that now has no on-field identity and few discernable advantages lost to a powerhouse. This, quite simply, was why Browns time is finished.
Much of the fan base bolted to the exits in the middle of the fourth quarter. Those who stayed did so to chant and clap for their coach.
When it was over, Brown did what he always did: He walked to the sideline and threw up the horns as The Eyes of Texas blared. As the cameras and reporters engulfed him, he could barely see the band.

OSU is one of the few schools on par with Texas in prestige, donor money and fan base. If he was anywhere else but OSU, I’d say yes. Urban is in his home state, and will likely dominate the Big Ten for a long as he wants to. I am not sure if his salary, so big TX money might be the only thing that might change that.
HA I didn’t even have to look at the poster to see who it was
HNY
I must say, he does look real good in burnt orange.
that's why he might jump..Bama exposed ND last year..and I think that Clemson wins easy.
As an old school type of fellow who has followed college football since the 1957 season, I have become heartsick over the status of the game. Wins and championships have always been the holy grail of CFB, but when championships become the only measure of success for a coach or a program, something is not right in the world.
As a TOSU alum, you are welcome to Urban Myer. My dissatisfaction with him is not wins or losses, but rather that he represents what is wrong with the game today.
And we love him in Florida Orange
Keep your mitts off our coach. :)
(I really don’t think he’s going anywhere.)
So does the rest of the SEC.
I will never forgive Mack for the way he treated Major during his senior year.
Disgraceful, and hiring him as an offensive coordinator is not an apology but some type of forgiveness episode to make him feel better. just like the way libs treat blacks.
Maybe Coach Boom still has property in Texas...
“Yep. Look at all the teams in the b12. Theyre filled with players who wanted be be Longhorns.”
Maybe. But, they got over it. And, now they’re quite happy to be on teams that win conference championships instead.
Not trying to hijack the thread, but Clemson isn’t beating anybody. OSU may be overhyped, but Clemson hasn’t beaten anyone this year and lost big to the only highly ranked teams they played. Clemson will be destroyed by a not so great OSU team. The ACC will lose again when Auburn (the SEC’s third best team ) easily puts away FSU. No one from the ACC plays big boy football and that’s just a fact.
Since you started your New Year's Eve drinking so early, I hope you have a designated driver.
I hear you and feel the same way. Mack showed his true colors when he sucked up to papa Simms to push Major aside for Chris - who was mediocre at best. He’s a politician & salesman who will do well in the glad-handing world, but Texas will be MUCH better off without him as coach - if they hire a committed coach who knows how to recognize and develop talent.
I haven’t gotten even one conference championship.
Re: Conference championships:
Many are called, and few are chosen.
I think you may have missed the point I way trying to make..or perhaps I made it badly..your assessment of Clemson is 100% correct..no argument here..the choked against SC and FSU..they got clocked..and when ( OK..if you prefer, "if" )they beat OSU..that confirms that the B1G is way overrated, and the Buckeyes are the best of a very bad conference, with a very inflated record..
