Jail survey: Nearly 3/4 felons register as Democrats
washington examiner ^ | december 31, 2013 | paul bedard

A new study of how criminals vote found that most convicts register Democratic, a key reason in why liberal lawmakers and governors are eager for them to get back into the voting booth after their release.

“Democrats would benefit from additional ex-felon participation,” said the authoritative study in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

Who would have guessed! I’ll bet that the dead are 99% Dims and the illegals about the same.

I didn’t think felons could vote. But maybe that is just here.

Please disregard. Looks like when any sentence, parole, etc is completed voting rights are restored.

“Democrats would benefit from additional ex-felon participation,”

And probably from pre-felon participation too.

Of course

One of the first thing Martin O Malley did when he took over and Maryland governor 2007 was sign a Dem passed bill giving all felons (no longer in jail) the vote.

And naturally a few freepers told me they approved of that in comments over the years.

Not so much now I bet,

RE “- FREE REPUBLIC threads are loaded with “sleepers”

These folks use a libertarian argument that we are all criminals.

To get sympathy one posted that he is a felon on a gun possession charge.

I didn't buy it. There is no doubt to me why Maryland Democrat assembly and Martin O Malley gave all released criminals the vote.

Here in Mexi-fornia, when I see someone who looks like human garbage, I would be happy to wager that person is a Democrat. If I could take bets, I could become hugely wealthy...dirty, long dirty stringy hair, shaggy beard, dirty clothes, often in the 20’s and 30’s....the kind of person you would not want to shake the hand of for fear of catching some disease...bet is a Democrat. Or a Black or Mexican, Gay Rights person, etc.

Idiot Repub leadership...think if they vote for Amnesty for the 30+ million illegals, the former illegals will magically vote Repub. Right... Like the way legal Blacks, Hispanics, etc currently vote Repub?

Truly the Repub leadership are morons...or Dem Party Trojan horses.

Boner and McSurrender surely are not so stupid as to believe newly Amnestied low income types will vote for them?

So does this mean FReepers want me to stop voting?

Yes, That's exactly what some mean.

Too bad for them because in all 50 states, felons who have served their time may vote - That's all 50 states. In some states felons must meet certain requirements but most states it's simply that they have served their time and parole requirements, if that applies.

Maine and Vermont allow incarcerated felons to vote.

Though it might pain some, felons also regain their other rights too, with the exception of owning a gun, which is also an injustice.

By "just here", I'll take it that you mean Texas, as that's the state flag you fly. In Texas as in many states, a felon who has served his time plus any parole that applies may vote. It is so in all 50 states, with a few states adding other restrictions.

Maine and Vermont allow incarcerated felons to vote.

Pleasde see #55. It isn’t just Maryland, it’s all 50 states.

The idea that guys sit in jail or prison dreaming of the day they can vote is one that makes global warming seem sane.

Nobody is asking any questions about this study which again is completely stupid. I want to know the exact questions asked, the demographic of those asked, were they in jail when asked etc.

Its an issue for the states to decide as it should be. Here in Michigan all that is required is to not be incarcerated on parole or probation which is fine. I personally think the idea of voting in jail or prison is insane but we don’t allow it here.

And as far as the felonies are concerned, the self righteous are tempting fate. Felonies were once generally crimes that a person went out of their way to commit. Now they’re often created crimes like refusing to comply with edicts of the state.

I guess FReepers will happily sign up for Obamacare to avoid becoming a criminal.

I once asked my b-i-l, now deceased, who had spent 23 years in prison, about the political leanings of convicts.

He said, “generally speaking, that the younger convicts tended to be liberal, while the older ones tended to be conservative, a lot like on the outside”.
