Pretty much a Marxist response. Excuse me if I no longer believe your sincerity. Go hate where you normally post.

They actually married at 16 & 18 while in college. Can a 16 year old be in college? My sister was. That's where she met her future husband and married him at 17 years old. Phil also calls his daughters in law Yuppies. He told grandsons to go to Walmart and buy a personality. That will be the Brit or Liberal Tabloids next scandal LOL.

His young marriage wasn't considered out of the norm for the times, community, and even the south. Perhaps Stingray should listen carefully to what Kay said in their renewal of vows and their relationship. Nah. This was like some Troll the other day hitting threads condemning people and cursing posters for having TV LOL.

I think the past tense of bethroed is “bethrew” or “bethrown”.

Yeah but you know how funky the subconscious can be.

Darn projection.

The baseline IV estimates imply that women who marry young are 31 percentage points more likely to live in poverty when they are older. Similarly, women who drop out of school are 11 percentage points more likely to be in families below the poverty line.”

I took a look at the study. It does not control for race or socio-economic status. It could just as easily be said that a characteristic of underclass women is that they both drop out of school and have kids at a young age. In the early days covered by the study (1950's thru 1970's) such women might get married at a young age. In current times, they just have kids at a young age without bothering with marriage at all.

Such women who have kids as teens are FAR more likely to be in poverty when they have kids outside marriage, than they were when they just married young.

So you assume all girls not married by 16 are whores and sluts???

You missed the second paragraph of the post you're quoting, where I said "Maybe not marriage at 16, but I think girls should look at being married by 22".

The average age at which girls these days become sexually active, is around 17. They will go though a number of sexual partners before perhaps settling down in their late 20's.

I'm saying that perhaps it would be better if they got married earlier than late 20's, like early 20's.

You damn right GO PHIL!

My grandma was 13 when she got married. My mother was 15,
and the Virgin Mary was around 15 when she gave birth to Jesus.

So much for that vaunted English sense of humour I've heard so much about.

Have they all had their funny bones removed by order of Health & Safety?

A hundred years ago, for most Americans, childhood ended at 15. Of those who went to high school, most left school at 16

So how would you feel if your daughter married at 16?

RE: So how would you feel if your daughter married at 16?

I would not give my blessing as she was not mature enough at that age. She is 21 now and still unmarried.

One of my nieces on the other hand ( now 22 and just married), was wise and mature beyond her years at 16. She’d probably make a good wife even at that age.

As I stated in the beginning of this very interesting thread, I married at 16. Not pregnant. And several I knew did the same thing. I lived in the city..so it wasn’t a rural phenom.

I don’t want to paint with a broad brush, but maturity levels have changed. The demand to be responsible has changed.

Although your question really wasn’t directed to me, the reply to your question (how would you feel if your daughter married at 16?) based on the 16 year olds I know today...I would have to say NO WAY. But that holds true for 90 per cent of the 30 year olds that I know.

Bottom line, imho, Robertson based his comment on what was prevalent on the conditions of his time. And besides...after seeing the video...it was for humor.

We have a president making all kinds of outlandish statements...and people seem to be centered on something a reality star says. Go figure.

He's talking about marriage.

The RATs just want to get them out there doing the wild thing, staying single, having babies, and getting on welfare.

AND VOTING RAT!

There is nothing like our first love. Perhaps a long engagement while they get their ducks in a row is a great idea.

Since she would need MY parental consent to marry at 16, it would not be given unless the guy in question, and his family, were WELL known by our family, of good reputation, mature, had a good job, and truly loved my daughter. If I had high confidence that he would make my daughter happy, I might give consent. (but more likely I would have them wait until she was 18).

As for the age of consent. one thing that is wrong with high schools is that they have the same rules for 17 year olds as for 14-year olds. A 17 year old is not—or ought not to be—a “child.”
