Alabama Mom's ObamaCare Horror Story Gives America a Glimpse of Government-Run Healthcare
Independant journal Review ^ | 12/31/2013 | Emily Hulsey

Many of us can identify with the frustrating experience that Karri Kinder, a mother of two from Auburn, Alabama, has had with Obamacare. She penned this open letter to share her story:

An Open Letter to the Obama Administration and American Citizens:

My family’s journey with securing our new insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) started on October 1, 2013. I have decided to write this letter to let the American people know what it has been like for us. We are a family of four, with two little boys’ ages seven years old and three years old. My husband and I have had full time jobs for 6 years and 13 years respectively. We have been with the same two companies for those years. We are a middle class family; we own our three bedroom two bath house, we own two cars, and previously provided our own insurance for the four of us. We have coverage through Individual Blue from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama until 12/31/13. Our premiums have been $380.00 a month, which also included dental coverage for all four of us.

On October, 1, 2013 we received our letters like other Alabamians about our new premiums and plans for 2014 from Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Alabama. When I opened our letter to say I had sticker shock was an understatement. Our premiums for the Blue Saver Silver would now be $753.26. This included the ACA tax but did not include the additional $75.00 we would need to pay in order to keep dental for me and my husband. So we would need to pay total $828.26 to keep health and dental insurance for the four of us. This payment is roughly $64.00 less than what we pay for our mortgage each month.

You are right. I wish I could find an old blog I used to read every week or so. It belonged to a Brit, whose ex-wife was dying of cancer. Under the UK’s system, she would be allowed one course of chemo and radiation. It failed, and she was told to go home and get her affairs in order.

The blogger/ex-husband refused the verdict (death panel), contacted MD Anderson in Houston, and asked if it was curable. They replied, at that stage, they had a high remission rate for it.

When I lost track of him, he was in the process of selling the home and other assets. He was extremely anxious and exhausted from caring for his ex-wife. He also had a sullen step-daughter who proved to be more useful staying in her bedroom. I don’t believe he had many readers.

I was away from my normal routine for awhile (moving) and lost his link. I’d found it through another writer’s extensive blog roll. She doesn’t remember it, and I couldn’t find it in a google search.

I don’t know if the man and his ex ever made it to Houston. Maybe someone here knows about the man’s blog and his ex-wife’s fate. The blog page had the Texas flag on it. He had a lot to say about NHC, and, of course, almost all of it was negative.

This is where we are headed, thanks to the Kenyan, Congress, and clueless voters.

I would think that she could petition the ins commissioner of her state and also write to BCBS and ask how they can cancel her policy when she has a child with a preexisting condition (ala Bill Elliott and a few other people who got their ins reinstated citing similar issues).

I’d hoist them on their own petard using their laws! The following is from C. Steven Tucker: The health insurers across the nation who are canceling health insurance policies based on a posting in the Federal Register in June of 2010 which redefined the ‘grandfathered clause’ in the original PPACA (Obamacare) legislation are violating federal law. Specifically section 2742 of Public Law 104-191 (HIPAA). It is linked at my blog: TruthAboutPreexistingConditions.com.

This is an existing federal law that is still on the books and that is relied upon, expanded upon, and referred to multiple times throughout the 960 pages of the PPACA legislation. This law was codified by congress and signed by President Clinton in 1997. Since that was signed into law it has been and still is illegal for any health insurer to cancel anyone’s coverage when they are sick. Regardless of what Barack Obama or anyone else says. It has been and still is illegal for any health insurance anywhere in the nation to ‘drop your coverage’ when you get sick. Period. And, when I say period I mean it, unlike Barack Obama.

That may be terminal conditions only, but I would get in contact with Mr. Tucker...

Her big problem seems to be that they won’t pay for mind-altering stimulants for her kid, so he doesn’t sit in class staring out the window.
Better bad grades than 15 years of sleeplessness and psychotic breaks diagnosed as “bi-polar disorder” requiring more mind-altering chemicals.
She probably only eats drug-free beef and pork.

Just one point of clarification - you don't own your home if you still have a mortgage.

Actually you don't own it ever as long as it can be taxed. There used to be real homestead exemption in some states, but I think that has largely disappeared, or the amount allowed has shrunk because of inflation.

“... this attitude that people are getting what they deserve is simply wrong.”

How is it wrong? Decisions have consequences. Elections have consequences. Ignoring the truth when it’s there to be found has consequences. Even if Romney, et al., didn’t raise the issues during the campaign, the truth was still there. We knew it; so could everyone.

Frankly, I hope Obama voters can’t get healthcare and dreadful thing happen to them. God works in mysterious ways.

Maybe had a Pre existing condition?

That medical history evidently caused the 7 YO's application to get funneled into some kind of code bug in the federal exchange software. It definitely isn't disqualifying in a legal sense as one of the big points of PP&ACA is to mandate acceptance of applicants with pre-existing conditions. This is why the staff she talked to on the phone were uniformly puzzled about the situation.

I wonder if this would have happened if Alabama had been running a state exchange. I have not heard of any similar problems on my own state's exchange. There have been glitches such as incorrect subsidy calculations, but not outright erroneous rejection for either a subsidized exchange plan or state Medicaid to the best of my knowledge. However, mixed commercial and government coverage-type applications are quite complex and the required code must reflect this complexity if it is to process the apps correctly.

I don’t know why people keep saying things like this. This stuff is happening to many people, and even if many did vote for Obama (or didn’t vote) the fact is they were mislead by those in power, and maybe we can say they were even mislead by Romney, et al. also who was/were unwilling to raise these issues during the campaign. But this attitude that people are getting what they deserve is simply wrong.

I fully agree with what you said back on New Year's Day. These comments are embarrassing and a stain on the conservative mantle. They make great fodder for "mean Republican" comments on DU, etc., and certainly aren't Christian.

For pubbies, it is a club with which to pound democrats.

Right, which is why the Stupid Party will never repeal it, even if they do get the White House and Congress in 2016. They'd rather have something to beat up the Democrats with than actually do the right thing and repeal this monstrosity. So it's up to us. Here's what we do: We all QUIT our jobs and force the Government to cover us under Obamacare (thus breaking the system and destroying it at its core) or we all have our salaries reduced to qualify for the Obamacare "subsidies" and break the system that way.

It's the only way we're gonna get rid of this thing I'm afraid. The Stupid Party sure as hell isn't doing anything about it, nor will they!

Thank you. I’d love to laugh at this stuff, but I know some people are going to really suffer because of it.

It’s amazing how Obama really doesn’t care; he’s barely feigning to care. I think he’s ruined himself with the public.

He’s like Cinderella’s coach at midnight.

Sadly, you’re right.

I did say that I hope dreadful things happen to the OBAMA VOTERS.
