WASHINGTON — Americans enter 2014 with a profoundly negative view of their government, expressing little hope that elected officials can or will solve the nation's biggest problems, a new poll finds.

Half say America's system of democracy needs either "a lot of changes" or a complete overhaul, according to the poll conducted by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Just 1 in 20 says it works well and needs no changes.

Americans, who have a reputation for optimism, have a sharply pessimistic take on their government after years of disappointment in Washington.

The percentage of Americans saying the nation is heading in the right direction hasn't topped 50 in about a decade. In the new poll, 70 percent lack confidence in the government's ability "to make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014."

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and fearful master."

90% of Congress gets re-elected, so what difference does it make.

Half of this country would believe water is dry, if Matt Damon and Ben A**fleck (or any other Leftist celebrity) said it was.

Even the media get it wrong. The USA does is not supposed to have "a system of democracy".

Our forefathers thought that was a recipe for chaos and disaster.

The USA is supposed to be a representative republic. Unfortunately, we have let democracy slip in under the radar and establish a stronghold.

A lot of our fellow citizens have a death wish to be controlled.

Better to have faith in God than government!

Yet they keep voting the same drip incumbents back into office to fleece the American taxpayer yet again. Someone needs to explain this phenomenon to me.

The title statement in the MSM shows they just don’t get what the American Experiment means, what the 5000 year leap is all about. Faith is not supposed to be even used in any statement with government inside it. Faith is reserved for religion. When talking about government, we should be talking more about protection from government... and referring to an armed citizenry on the watch for it overstepping its bounds. The government should be, in fact and deed, about the people handing over some small amount of power to people we place some trust in to manage our nation’s sovereignty.

It’s only the left, goreBall warmists, progressivists that talk about “faith” and “government”.

When about 47% is the approval rate for Obama it is no wonder that we are where we are. A Representative Republic that consists of informed voters and dedicated representatives is not where we’re at.

Unelected bureaucrats, who can’t be disciplined, held accountable or fired, run our government now. Pretty sneaky, huh? It’s a perfect out for our reps to point their fingers down the hall and just shrug and spin to their heart’s desire while taking no responsibility for anything.

It starts at the top.

It has reached a point

Ya. In a related story, Americans are dumb because they keep re-electing politicians who eagerly hand over more and more power to the government.

Few Americans today know anything of George Washington and have no desire to be informed.

It is the natural cycle of governments. We are on the down hill side now — huge debt and no way to pay it off, people expecting lots of freebies and electing people who will give them even more freebies.

*Is there a poll on the wetness of water?*

Poll finds bears like to live in the woods

Poll finds popes are generally Catholic

Poll finds Al gore to be a liar
