WEST VALLEY CITY A local gun manufacturer is gaining attention after announcing its decision to turn down a multi-million dollar deal to legally supply Pakistan with precision rifles.
Desert Tech was approached with the opportunity to sell precision rifles to Pakistan in November. The company turned the deal down this week because of fears the guns could eventually be used against U.S. troops.
"The company was founded on the principle of keeping Americans and our allied forces safe," said sales manager Mike Davis. "Were not saying that Pakistan would get the weapons and do anything bad with them, but theres just a heavy set of unrest over there."
The contract would have been lucrative and the current United States administration supports foreign military arms sales to Pakistan forces, but Davis said after internal discussion they decided it wouldn't be a good fit for their company. Some of the employees are veterans who have been to the Middle East and seen the situation first hand. Other employees have family members and friends currently serving in military engagements in the region.
"As a business owner you always want to be successful, but I think ethically and morally you want to go about it the right way and stick behind your founding principles," Davis said.
A post by founder Nick Young on the company's Facebook page on Tuesday has gone viral, with more than 2,000 likes and 1,000 shares so far. In the post Young asked readers if they thought the company's concerns about selling rifles to Pakistan were legitimate.
Even though Young and other employees felt turning down the deal was the right thing for the company, Davis said it was a difficult decision to make because of the amount of money involved.
"(Young) made that decision and he put the post out there, I think, because he wanted to see if he made the right choice," Davis said. "Sometimes going with your heart and what you feel about something is the hardest thing to do."
Davis said they were surprised by the response they received and have been very humbled by the support.
The feedback has been tremendous weve had literally thousands of emails and shares from military members (and) everybody just really respecting the decision we made, he said.
The manufacturer has completed military contracts with other countries, Davis said. They also sell weapons to law enforcement agencies and civilians.
Desert Tech was founded in 2007 and is located in West Valley City. Young is originally from the Salt Lake City area.
Were very fortunate to be from Utah and were very proud to be a Utah-based company," Davis said.
could sell them broken guns
Mail them a crate of Mosins then take the money and run.
btt
I wish I was in a position to $upport this company with a purchase or three.

It would seem the man isn’t into lesser evils and backed it op with a huge loss in profit. We need a million more like him.
Wonder if this might get through to anyone.
Bravo!
But who’d sell gun to murderous islamists anyway?
Who knows, the Obungler maybe?
How refreshing! Usually you get the “Well, if I don’t, some one else will, so I might as well.”
This is a great example for ALL Americans to follow, and I will bet that others do. Not many, probably. But some. And that’s more than do now. Patriotism. What a great thing it is to see.
Pinging my list to an off topic article that might interest some of you. A GREAT example of the kind of patriotism you don’t see every day.
Just shorten the firing pins enough...
Call it a “bad batch”.
See what I'm talkin 'bout? This is the sort of thing that gives me hope, and there are examples of it all around us.
And it is a wonderful, fantastic thing.
He’s one guy. One real American that doesn’t think that purity is of the Devil, that standing on principle is a vote for Obama and every other asinine excuse we see daily.
Sure it has to start somewhere. But we are a long way from enough people removing their head from their dark places and until a significant number do, we are way way deep in trouble.
Thinking about it a bit more, This is yet another example of what I harp on. Here is a man that said exaclty, practically verbatim what a bunch of us did in the run up to the election and were screamed at, mocked and the rest.
There are what? 15 posts on a thread that has been up for hours on a HUGE blow against muslim BS and a huge win for the idea of Principles matter.
15 posts. I guess after so many spent so much effort on a conservative website slamming purists like this guy and his dreaded principles, it’s sorta hard for folks to pat him on the back. Because that would cause loss of face.
15 posts.
Good.
Thanks for the Ping Mesta! :)
In defense of our fellow Freeps, let me remind you of how much support was expressed here for Phil Roberton's statements to GQ Magazine last month. That support continues even now.
Before that, there was a huge outpouring of support here for Dan Cathy of Chik-fil-A, when he made similar comments.
But --- I do take your point, Normie. I would also like to see more of our folks comment positively on this man's demonstration of principles in action.
To be sure there was an outpouring of support over the DD thing. I read a bunch of the threads and was glad to see it.
But I wasn’t so glad to see the same handful accuse Rovertson and family of taking everyone for a ride and it all being a PR stunt for profit.
And there was almost no blowback against the same hanful of people spouting that garbage.
Its frustrating as hell. But it shows how unwilling people are to step on toes and confront bullshit when it happens.
Oh, you’ve touched a nerve there.
I’ve long said that FR should clean house of all the doom and gloomers. They’re our enemies best friends. They take the wind out of our sails and destroy group morale.
It’s right out of Sun Tzu’s book.
