“Mr. President, in case you haven’t noticed, we have aircraft carriers now, and computers, and satellites, and missiles, and radar, really cool technology. But Blimps? Blimps? Oh Boy, such low technology and defense.”

This isn’t being done as some boondoggle to put money in a connected contractors pocket. Both the Navy and Air Force have been determined to keep any Lighter Than Air (LTA) systems from ever being deployed as they actually are more efficient in some ways than aircraft for some tasks. Now suddenly blips are going to be deployed as part of a cruise missile screen. This can only mean that there is a real threat not a potential one from some of our Muslim friends. The Saudis have enough money to buy systems from several countries (France for instance) and the Iranians are good customers of North Korea a country that has produced cruise missiles on the sly. So this tells me there is a real true threat and cruise missiles could only be thought of as a true strategic threat if we believe their war heads will be chemical, biological, or nuclear of some kind. So far the press is just reporting the story in a way guaranteed to make it disappear after a day or two.

Yes we need to protect against incoming Afghani Missles

Obama thought it only fair that we use last centuries technology in order to level the playing field.

Is but a small part of his Year Of Action

Like the old barrage balloons of WWII? The theory was a dive bomber might get entangled in the balloon cable and crash.

Cruise missiles? From who?

Iran. Or some Islamic terrorists who were provided with cruise missiles by Iran.

Cruise missiles launched to the US mainland?

From offshore merchant ships. Courtesy of Iran or Islamic terrorists supplied by Iran. Possibly nuclear-tipped.

It's not far-fetched. And the source ship, which would be scuttled with all hands, would leave the perp undetectable.

Yep, that scenario has been thought of before.

These blimps have a different purpose -- unmanned surveillance, e.g., 24/7 radar that could detect a distant launch and track the approach, then be used to vector interceptor missiles.

Actually, they're called "Aerostats" and I've seen them used along the Southern border to provide wide-area surveillance for the purpose of inderdicting drugs or illegals.

Look, not just any ship can launch a cruise missile.
They cant just sit it on a deck and just launch it by lighting a fuse with a match. They are way more complicated than that.
I bet with all Irans boasting they never demonstrated being able to launch one from a ship.

Just the other day a freeper was claiming here that a Iranian ship would sit of our coast and drop an EMP bomb over Kansas to shut down all electronics for hundreds of miles.

Let me go on the record here : neither of these things are happening.

No, they are still in use. Depending on the time of year there are 3 aerostats up near here in Yuma Az. There is always 1 up all year. Border Patrol and the Marine Corps use it.
