Not a surprise. His photos over the last few years have shown him going down hill way fast

That’s how powerful heroin is. Money, fame, an Oscar and 2 young children didn’t/couldn’t stop him from being a junkie.

What a shame. He was a fantastic actor. Loved him in Moneyball, A Late Quartet, Hunger Games, Pirate Radio, Charlie Wilson’s War, Mission Impossible III, Cold Mountain, Patch Adams, etc.

Although I am surprised, I did notice he seemed less vibrant and more 'muddy' over the last few years in his performances. I sensed he was using and abusing drugs. Unfortunately I was right. As someone who has been sober and clean for many years and spent many an AA in attendance with with A list actors such as Hoffman, it really hits home the seriousness of the disease and shows that it is a daily deprive given to all recovering people based on there relying on God and doing the footwork of not picking up a drink or drug.
Very sad indeed. But a reminder to all of us that think we got this thing after years of recovery.
Hoffman was a fantastic and gifted actor and thank God he had a pause in his disease that we got to see his God given talent soar. May he rest in peace.

One thing I never figured out about heroin is that almost everybody knows you become an addict almost from the get-go from it. So what reasoning goes thru someone's mind when the opportunity for the first injection comes? I mean someone who is somewhat rational? Do they think something like, "Hey, time to explore the wonderful world of being hooked on heroin?"
I just don't get it especially since you have to shove a needle in your arm. That would be a turnoff for me right there. Oh, and also the helpless junkie part as well.
