They could save money in their mailings. I got 6 small brochures from them today. Expect at least 5 more before the end of the week.

Yep ... nervous as heck.
They’ve already offered a “volunteer separation package” that many have taken advantage of ... but not enough.

I figured things were getting ugly. I bought a Dell computer for my son for Christmas and then found a better cheaper one shortly after. I cancelled the Dell order and the rep was begging me to reconsider including offering me 25% off to keep it.
Never a good sign.

Newly Private Dell Computers To Fire 15,000 that's why it's called capitalism....obviously he can make more money without the 15000. perhaps the rules of zer0 care is what is costing the company money....either way in a vibrant economic environment this probably wouldn't have happened.../p>

Not much. "The severance package is two months' pay plus an extra week of pay for each year of service, a bonus at 75 per cent, obligated COBRA health insurance for 18 months in the United States, and outplacement services (in the US at least)." That's a lot more than I ever got any of the times I was laid off.

We heard from people close to the Round Rock Dell HQ area that Dell management has every conference room booked,Ah, I remember when word would come from one of the secretaries that HR had all the conference rooms reserved. Our telephones had a dual ring for outside calls and a single for inside. On those days no one inside the office would call anyone inside the office except HR. You would hear your neighbor's phone do the single ring and it was "dead man walking".
They always got the job done in the morning and those of us left at lunch were relieved. There was one where the casualties were high and the phone calls started again after lunch. Those of us that survived that day felt like we were walking out of a war zone.

I built my current PC and the one before it. This one is on year three and the previous one lasted 4 before I decided to upgrade it. I’ve never had a problem out of either one because I didn’t use the cheapest parts available and I put in proper cooling systems. I expect my current PC to last another 2+ years.

Well it is cheaper to fire Americans and go Dell elsewhere in the world for our manufacturing.
Now, as people point to this and other companies that do this I don't think we should be steaming mad at the company. We should be steaming mad at our government not allowing us to become more competitive or to perhaps believe we are so intellectually superior that no way people could go elsewhere.
WRONG!

Not a bad severance package. These days one always have to be ready to be a rat and leave a sinking ship.

tablets are also cutting into desktop and laptop pc sales. I’ve seen figures that indicate pc sales are on a steadily downward trend. I can offer my own anecdotal proof as well. I used to surf and post on FR from a desktop with dial-up. ( i live in the middle of nowhere and faster internet has yet to arrive) I now surf and post from a kindle 3G. It’s much faster and does the same job. To paraphrase JFK computer companies these days have to run very fast just to stand still.

Just watch how crazy the sales staff on QVC start to become!
I think it’s amazing Dell has done as well this long. Without a change in business model.. I remember marketing research predicting his doom in 1992, and I don’t think he’s changed much since then.
Inertia is all I can attribute it to.
Remember the guy started out of a dorm room selling backdoor IBM PCs then move in on the clone market. He had a long run for that initial idea.
