I just realized that we have probably 700,000 to 1.3 million years before this thing is due to blow again.

How do you figure that?

It's been erupting roughly every 600,000 years for the last two million.

It's actually, sort-of, due.

But, given that the "600,000" figure is approximate, if it erupts next year it won't be early, but if it doesn't erupt for another 10,000 years, it won't be late.

Mars indeed would be the only place left to go, at least as far as any organized society is concerned, should the super volcano blow it’s top.

Web search for "Olympus Mons" (LOL!)

Sure, no one has seen that one erupt, either, but it did, too.

Sometimes, better the devil ya know...

As long as humanity isn't stupid enough to sacrifice its capabilities on the altar of controlling the weather, we possess the ingenuity to survive as a species. We are far more capable than our distant ancestors, provided we learn enough tech to do so and have the will to implement it.

Some rudimentary structures could protect access to water wells, power sources, and keep roofs from collapsing--even create new structures within the ash layers. Sufficient food for the time it takes to start converting the new mineral soil into a decent agricultural base, and recovery could be fairly fast (less than a decade). Preservation of records of the location of assets which did get buried would permit faster recovery (fuel supplies, construction equipment, oil wells, coal mines, power plants, food warehouses, etc.).

Yes, there would be a 'bottleneck' while many succumbed, but the species could survive.

As cold as this may sound, those with the ingenuity and ability and drive to survive got through the last bottleneck event, (with location and luck being factors as well), with probably far less technology to support their initial efforts. While the parasite class would be severely thinned, the survivors would be of hearty and intelligent stock if the preserved close to modern technology, otherwise, it is back to scrounging and chipping flint and sitting by the fire, listening to the elders tell tales of the wonders of long ago...in the days before the sky went dark.

It will skip a cycle in order to accommodate the period of the human race.

I was not aware of that.

That’s most gracious of it.

Hopefully we won’t need to toss it any virgins.

I believe it formed a massive caldera (cauldron) of lava that's the source of the problem. The science on this says that if it were to go good bye to the Southwest, the Midwest and most of the East coast along with a sizable portion of Mexico( could that be all bad?) and Canada too, eh? This is no joke. If the eggheads are correct this will be a really bad day for us. And the resulting cloud of ash and dusk is going to world wide so other countries will be affected by it. They also say the last time this erupted was thousands of year ago when there were animals here and humans hadn't arrived yet and according to the facts this thing is over due to erupt again. Pray.

So...you really are a chicken...are you afraid to ping me to posts that refer to me? Afraid to talk directly to me? Or is it that you're just ignorant of common FReep courtesy, which is that you ping those people to whom you refer? I guess not...cowards like you love to talk about folks behind their backs.

Thanks for the heads up, Bobby.

I have never referred to your sister, nor would I. I know nothing about her, so why would I talk about her? I don't appreciate anyone putting words in my mouth, especially sniveling little cowardly liars like you. Isn't the internet great, though? It makes sick little men like you, all nice and anonymous like, feel free to say things about people that, if you said it to their (my) face, well, let's just say you wouldn't do it twice.

I do, however, know you've bragged in the not-too-distant past about how long you've lived overseas...Central Europe before the Philippines. For example,

* "I am just thankful that I have not set foot in the USSA in the last ten years."
* "Next year I may be back in central Europe, which is now more free then
(sic) the USSA."
* "When I left the US for the last time in 2004"
* "No, I do not owe any taxes. I can not think of anyone (US citizens) who have ever mentioned taxes."

This last one is interesting. If you're now 71, that means in 2004, you were 61...too young by at least a year to draw Social Security. Now, I suppose you could have lived off savings for a year, but if you earned any income from work for that 1-4 years before you could draw SS, and you didn't pay taxes on that income, you're a tax cheat. Or I suppose you could just be lying. Either is believable.

"It is hard to keep up with this Wacku kid and his many lies."

So, you're lying about me, accusing me of saying something I never said about your sister. Okay, jackwagon...I'm throwing down the gauntlet. Go find that quote, like I did your quotes, and post it. You can't, because I've never said anything about your sister. You really remind me of Lenin, who told his people to "accuse others of what you do". Bald-faced, cowardly lying sack of crap. Maybe it's just your "Waku" mind.

"Oh, one other point. I have NEVER told anyone that they should leave America."

No? Let's see...

* "Good for you, but you should still investigate options for expiating should the USSA gets even worse. Local and weather disasters are one thing, but political breakdown is another matter. Central and South America seem to be the most popular destinations. Internationalliving.com and EFAM.com are good sites to keep in mind. I get email updates from them every day."
* "Depends on a number of factors such as Married? single? have kids? For a single man, as I WAS, the Philippines can be quite nice especially if one is on a low budget. central Europe, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, and others, can be quite nice. I spent over five years there, mostly in Slovakia."
* "Better yet, move out of the USSA. I never see blacks where I live, and only about three in a big city, during the last 5 years."
* "do what I did, and get the hell out of Dodge while you still can.

So...who's the liar, Alex? These are all your words, posted on this forum since last June.

2Div, you see what we're up against. A coward, a liar, a mentally imbalanced (possible) tax cheat who is also racist, and thinks it's funny to have his poor wife serve as his laundry slave (another thread last week, about solar washing machines). There is nothing about Alex that isn't insulting to each and every patriotic American on this forum, so don't fall for his bullshi'ite. Everything he is runs counter to the oath you and I took, and are still bound by...especially the part about "I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

Woof, woof!

Great job wku man! This IS a 100% Pro-American site. Why cowards like alex w over the past months bash America, (AND continues to deny he did/does even with his own past posting words smacking himself upside his head), is beyond me. C’mon Dogs, give some support here to wku man for calling out this America, (oops.....according to numerous posts of alex w’s....we are the “USSA” now), slamming liar alex w.

Thanks for that post. That's the way I look at any potential SHTF scenario:

While the parasite class would be severely thinned, the survivors would be of hearty and intelligent stock if they preserved close to modern technology,

Such could be the last, best hope for humanity.
