How we ended up with a generation of no-discipline, no-talent job seekers
The Washington Post's Capital Business ^ | February 2, 2014 | Marina Ein

Helicopter parents, professors who aim to please, the dumbing down of standards in courses and decreasing curriculum requirements have succeeded in reducing our young workforce to a no-discipline, no-talent pool of job seekers. Harsh words for sure — but a generation out there is desperately in need of a reality check.

As a small-business employer, I have seen a disturbing downward talent drift in job candidates — most acutely in the past five years. When a job candidate’s first question is about vacation days or benefits, we know we have encountered collateral damage from the teachers and parents who believed in “softening the learning experience.” Armed with a meaningless bachelor’s degree from colleges and universities that allowed majors in non-core subjects, we see youngsters who cannot write, research or think analytically. Their lack of discipline is evident in job applications filled with typos and cover letters that reveal no interest in teamwork or service — rather, they emphasize their high opinion of themselves. (Many young job seekers come forward with an executive attitude that is backed by zero capabilities).

To heap insult on injury, this generation is unable to face criticism or negative evaluations. Having been shielded from the hardships of tough educational standards, they require praise and positivity — no matter how superficial their work and dedication may be. Recently, George Washington University Medical School offered faculty the opportunity to attend a lecture on how to work with millenials. It has come to this: They cannot perform, so it falls to employers to figure out how best to save their careers.

As someone who has worked with countless extraordinarily hard-working and skilled young people over the years, the dearth of college graduates with any ability is fear-inducing....

When I ran a small convenience store for 3 years, it was my consistent experience that when there was even a small challenge that might require going above and beyond the call of duty, millennials would choose to walk rather than put up with any discomfort.

I eventually quit myself, because you can only run a 24 hour business by yourself for only so long.

Low value work attracts low value employees. I’m sorry you couldn’t figure out how to make a profit.

A couple of years ago I began to notice these young workers who always had a super sized cup of soda next to them while they worked. Even the hostess of a restaurant might have one or the girl behind the counter at the dry cleaners. A few weeks ago, at the bank, I saw every teller with a large cup of soda on the counter next to her. Can’t these kids go two or three hours without drinking something?

In the old days, kids learned workplace skills at an early age in such roles as:

1. Theater ticket takers
2. McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell
3. Roofing, asphalt, farming, delivering papers

ALL of the above are now dominated by illegal aliens, and it’s getting worse.

This means many have an entitlement mentality and don’t learn to behave and communicate well until later, if at all.

There is culture rot, sure, but another important part of this is an UNRESTRICTED INVASION BY ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Whom would you prefer to employ, a pimply immature brat or a more mature illegal desperate to earn ANYTHING and also scared to cause any trouble, owing to their questionable status.

The kids are rotten, sure, but the omnipresence of de-facto slaves is something the Chamber of Commerce might well PREFER AND ENJOY.

A real cost of illegal immigration is our young people are NOT getting exposed to early work experiences.

I know many fine young hard working folks in their mid to late twenties. The majority of them are people I would be proud to work with. I remember back in my day the ‘older generation’ complained bitterly about us. I know that there are some out there not worth their salt but that is not the majority.

Asking about pay and benefits is not unheard of for any age group. I made the mistake when I was young and foolish of not nailing down those particulars and lived to regret it.

I have a friend in the Marine Corps who tells me its now common for drill instructors to receive anxious and instructional calls from recruits’ mothers.

I wish I knew some present D.I.’s who could confirm or deny that for me....

Convenience stores are a low productivity business. You cannot pay well, because such businesses cannot generate the level of profits that other businesses can.

It’s a good place to get your feet wet in the working world and I was willing to do what I can to help them gain real working skills so they could go get better jobs. Unfortunately they couldn’t see any value beyond what was written on their paycheque.

You said...A real cost of illegal immigration is our young people are NOT getting exposed to early work experiences.

Ain't that the truth....used to be kids picked berries, beans and other crops during the summer...no can do much anymore...or they mowed lawns....oops, too dangerous, or people are afraid because they aren't paying the FICA, etc to the little wage earner. Government is the problem!

Brimming with self-confidence has been a common trait in young people since time began. As for entitlement, it depends on the person. Many are, plenty aren’t.

When you do receive confirmation will you please let me know?

I have long held that when the USMC is fully compromised this nation is fully screwed.

I saw this as someone who was not a member of the USMC.
