A pizza and dance party for straight-A students at a Maryland middle school has sparked controversy among parents and students alike.
While some parents and students felt it wasnt fair to only hold portions of the party for kids who had high marks, others said that the event actually serves as an incentive to encourage harder work among pupils.
Karen Hanlon, a parent with a child who has special needs and who was not invited to the party, said that the parameters simply werent fair.
The students that dont get to go end up feeling bad, she told The Washington Post, claiming that the party divides students into groups.

Has it been declared a Federal Crime to hurt someone's feelings yet?
If not, it will be soon!!
“Has it been declared a Federal Crime to hurt someone’s feelings yet?”
It’s got to be the right kind of someone.
I reckon if they threw a consolation party for all the kids who flunked nobody would have a peep to say about it.
Success is held suspect; failure is seen as courageous.
We really do live in a 1984 kind of world.
Women and minorities hardest hit
Straight “A” students need to be praised and hurt feelings on the part on the non-A students is just the incentive for them to strive to do better.
Another name for “Second Place” is “First Loser”.
The students that dont get to go end up feeling bad,
and THAT must never be allowed! Better to lower the A students to C’s and raise the F’s to C’s.
BooHoo. Study, stupid.
The Feel-Good PC crowd will get their panties in a real wad over this kind of stuff. But, the truth is that human advancement has always been at the hands and minds of exceptional people. And, anything we do to ‘collectivize’ those exceptional people will hinder the continued development of humankind, even in very small degrees.
It is unfortunate that not every child gets straight A’s. But, the ones who don’t certainly know why, and with help from their parents and guardians, they know how to overcome their own perceived limitations. They will not always the best, but they CAN ALWAYS BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE.
Mrs PubliusMM and I have a wonderful grandchild, now three years old, who faces challenges every day. But, that has never been used as an excuse to allow the youngster to stop short of his abilities. Our own children were raised the same way.
EVERYBODY gets a trophy.
Great way for kids to learn to deal with losing huh? Sadly this has been going on for far far too long. This kind of crap is what results in SandyHook and the theater in Aurora, the asshats at the Denver high school and various other multiple victim shootings, stabbings, bombings or whatever. Once they get above a certain age and see that they are NOT always a winner, they aren’t able to grasp the concept. It’s all contradictory to them. Yup they’re all winners. Then they realize that they may be a “winner” but their team didn’t win a single game. Confused? Conflicted? Unable to cope? Then when they become old enough to enter the “real” world, they wonder why they can’t have the $250k/yr job. No worries, the “lyin king” and his ilk are gonna lower the playing(did I mean level?) field so everybody is equally friggin’ broke.
When I was in 5th grade my teacher would give a Sugar Daddy to the student who could write the times table on the chalk board the fastest. That was an incentive!
I became the fastest by figuring out writing very small would give me an edge. Unfortunately my winnings resulted in cavities, but I was still proud of my accomplishment and no one complained.
That's the point...No one claims the A students work harder...It comes easy for some...
Some of them may have worked their butts off to get a B...They should certainly be rewarded as well...Even more so than some of the A students...
Dear Karen and other offended idiots... Pound salt.
Your child’s disabilities mean that you should spend your time as a parent making him/her the best they can be within the confines of their ‘ability’. Making them a victim means the continuance of what ails YOU. If you don’t know that much, you are unfit as a parent and as a human being.
Signed,
Normie. Disabled.
I wonder if tech companies like Google or Yahoo hire software designers and engineers based on feelings?
Or if the military allows total equality in all ways and allows anyone to fly its fighter jets and operate sophisticated equipment that cost billions of dollars — all so someone doesn’t get his feelings hurt?
I’d like to see THAT — from a very safe distance!!
America has its own ‘Little Emperor / Empress’ problem fueled by parents like these. Add to that the single mom norm (in all colours) and the setup is perfect to usher in long-term socialism once these progeny start voting and demanding entitlements.
Back when our daughter was on the U 10 soccer team that won the state title, her team got a medal on a ribbon and the second place team got a second place medal.
When she was a senior on the golf team, her team won the state golf tournament in 2004 and they got a trophy and plaque. The second place team got the second place trophy.
The other teams didn’t get jack. No participation ribbons, and that was just ten years ago. Now a days, you can’t let the losers know they just lost or didn’t make straight A’s in their courses.
I’m really surprised the teacher didn’t get in trouble for serving pizza in school. Was it approved by the state run lunch program?
***EVERYBODY gets a trophy.***
And the thrift stores are full of these worthless trophies, tossed by their owners.
And she learned the hard way about a "political" award....begun by a city "Black" politician.
Some evidence shows those who have had their self-esteem artificially pumped up by the schools: i.e., ‘everyone gets a prize!’ become violent when they don’t get their way or aren’t always rewarded in the real world.
Job interviews are all about competition.
My son was in a software design competition last year where only the BEST were rewarded, feelings didn’t count or matter to the judges who were all professors of engineering, math or CEOs of software companies (son took 2nd overall and 1st in innovation). Feeling had nothing to do with it — as they say, you either get the math or you don’t and FTR, I don’t, but he does.
Remember when a trophy meany you stood out for an accomplishment? Kinda like a Nobel prize.
Enough straight-A students to populate a dance party?
Grade inflation, I guess.
