Texas Primaries: Cornyn Slipping Well Below 50%
The Blaze ^ | 2/20/14 | Jim Ellis Jeff Schmidt

A new Gravis Marketing poll (conducted Feb. 10 – 12; sampling 729 likely Texas Republican primary voters) may be a harbinger of trouble for establishment Republican Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).

He faces Rep. Steve Stockman, Tea Party favorite Dwayne Stovall, and five others in a March 4 Republican primary election. If no candidate receives an absolute majority (50 percent plus one vote), the top two will face off in a May 27 run-off contest. The eventual Republican nominee will be a prohibitive favorite in the 2014 general election.

The run-off system is designed to ensure that the winning candidate receives a majority of support from the party voters. Therefore, when a universally known candidate in a primary race is forced to a secondary vote, like Sen. Cornyn in this case, the political death knell is usually sounded. The fact that a majority of the primary voters have already chosen an alternative candidate despite being keenly familiar with the front-runner normally spells eventual defeat for the under-performing first place finisher.

Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) 2012 electoral situation becomes an obvious model for the race in which Stockman, Stovall, and five others are currently embroiled with Mr. Cornyn.

The challengers’ objective will be to place second, and deny the senator outright victory on March 4. Two years ago, Mr. Cruz scored 34.2 percent of the vote in a Republican primary field of nine candidates, holding favored candidate David Dewhurst, the state’s sitting lieutenant governor, to 44.6 percent. In the run-off, with 22 percents less voters participating than from the first vote, Cruz went on to swamp Dewhurst, 57 to 43 percent.

Could the same fate await Cornyn?

I loved Ann Coulter last night on Hannity. She called out these phonies and frauds who are trying to claim the “Tea Party Banner”. Better take a closer look at some of these guys who proclaim what they really aren’t.

Do tell. Exactly who are these "phonies" claiming the Tea Party Banner?

I guess according to you and some others, you are on a warpath against the GOP, even if it means electing Democrats who all support Obama’s agenda.

Obama thanks you.

Oh, spare me already! If it were all up to you and your “strategy” to back every RINO the GOP establishment throws our way, deceitful Obama-loving leftists like Mike Castle, Dick Lugar, Bobby Bennett, Arlen Specter, and Charles Crist would all still be in the Senate and you’d apparently be perfectly content with it since they’d meet your stringent criteria of having an “R” next to their names.

For the record, I AM and will continue to be on the warpath against the GOP leadership and the RNC for as long as they continue to smear conservatives/the Tea Party and behave like Obama’s little pawns and left-wing-lite Democrats!

“For the record, I AM and will continue to be on the warpath against the GOP leadership and the RNC”

Funny you are on the warpath against Republicans, but NOT on warpath against Democrats, even after seeing what Obama, supported by the Dem majority in the Senate, is doing to the country.

If it weren’t for people like you, we may have a Republican majority in the Senate and Obamacare would be dead, instead of being shoved down our throat.

Brilliant strategic thinking! (/sarc)

You can’t win them all, and don’t overlook the vicious response by Lugar et al who refused to support the party’s nominee.

I’m too lazy to try and figure out if “tea party” candidates in general have a winning record, maybe somebody else will figure it out or maybe I’ll even do it later, but I feel pretty sure we’re at 50%.

And not that we are still loving everyone so much, but I think we’d still rather have Rubio in the senate rather than Crist, for one example.

“I would argue that if the...RNC and GOP leadership would actually start proactively ENDORSING, FUNDING, and CAMPAIGNING for our Tea Party nominees, like they always demand WE do for THEIR establishment candidates, perhaps the outcomes ...might[be different]”

100% agree. I have said this ever since the RINOs in NJ refused to support Schundler for Gov.

It’s a one way street with these people and they need to be kicked to the curb.

“but I think we’d still rather have Rubio in the senate rather than Crist, for one example.”

But that is NOT the choice — it is between Lugar or a Democrat.

If it weren’t for misguided “conservatives” pushing unelectable candidate, the GOP would control the Senate today.

See my tagline.

LOL, yeah!! Why, if the Tea Party had only gotten the hell out of the way and fully implemented YOUR brilliant strategy, we could possibly be closer to a Republican majority comprised of an unstoppable coalition of conservative stalwarts like Mike Castle, Dick Lugar, and Charlie Crist!! I mean, no one can deny how your precious RINOs are already doing such a bang-up job of going to the mat to repeal Obamacare... It was absolutely MASTERFUL the way John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Bob Corker all publicly slammed and rallied against Ted Cruz and Mike Lee for courageously taking to the Senate floor and trying to filibuster the funding of Obamacare! Why, everyone knows if we only had a few more tireless conservative warriors like John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell in the Senate, THAT would be the final death blow to Obamacare!!

Seriously, are you on Mr. Rove’s payroll? You sure sound like it. And did you ever stop to think we could more easily defeat the Dems if we actually elected candidates on our side actually WILLING to represent an opposition party? Would that not strike you as a more “Innovative” idea?

Indeed he did.

He’s also never done anything to reign in spending, borrowing and has voted to make sure that Obama has gotten the worst possible SecState and SecDef this country has ever had.

He really needs to quit the GOP and declare himself to be the RAT that he is.

Not with my vote.

IOW, FACT: you can’t refute my statement that you are enabling the Dems to win elections, defeating GOP candidates, by pushing R candidates who are unelectable in the general election.

While you are accusing me of “being on Rove’s payroll” — from the content of your posts, I could ask you whether you are on Obama’s payroll, trying to use “divide and conquer” strategy among Republicans.

I just don’t know if that’s true. On the last go-round there were many “establishment” candidates that lost, some who lost in states where Obama lost.

I have to agree with the other person. I’ve considered myself a so-con, always, but I voted for many “establishment” candidates, such as Christine Whitman.

But the favor is NEVER returned.

Brett Schundler was a good mayor in JC and he was one of the Rs who got the votes of minority people. But when he ran for governor all the hoity-toity white rich Jersey republicans had their knickers in a complete twist because he was pro-life. He got NO SUPPORT from those people and so we ended up with Corzine. Who, as we have learned, was basically either a crook or a complete boob.

It is this failure of the party that has led to the lack of support they are getting from the grassroots today.

If they are looking to place blame, they should look in the mirror.

I won't vote for liberal republicans. Your liberal republicans just took the cap off of borrowing, and are pushing amnesty.

I look forward to Cornyn being thrown out of office. He's a liberal prick that needs to go.

Um... just how am I enabling Dems to win elections by supporting candidates like Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, and (to a lesser extent) Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, and Ron Johnson? I’d say your so-called “fact” has just been refuted.

And remind me again who casted the 59th and 60th votes on the Senate floor to end Ted Cruz’s recent filibuster against raising the debt ceiling? Which party did these two “brave souls” happen to represent? Oh, that’s right... Your “Republican” leadership heroes, John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell! I guess if we’d only had a few more Susan Collinses and Lisa Murkowskises out there, we’d have surely won that fight hands down!

Funny, for all your comical equivocating of my support for Tea Party conservative candidates to “enabling Dems”, I haven’t seen YOU post one thing in support of any conservative/Tea Party candidates yet! Hmmm... Now I wonder why that could be??

Ru-oh...I thought Texas was going for Steve Stockman, but this article says “tea party favorite Dwayne Stovall.” Texas better make up its mind and not split the vote in the primary.
