Obamacare – It’s a Tax
There’s no escaping it.
Restaurant chains in Florida are adding an Obamacare surcharge on customers’ bills.
So now you can see how much of your purchase is going to fund the Democrats’ Un-Affordable Care Act. CNN Money reported:
Several restaurants in a Florida chain are asking customers to help foot the bill for Obamacare.
Diners at eight Gator’s Dockside casual eateries are finding a 1% Affordable Care Act surcharge on their tabs, which comes to 15 cents on a typical $15 lunch tab. Signs on the door and at tables alert diners to the fee, which is also listed separately on the bill.
The Gator Group’s full-time hourly employees won’t actually receive health insurance until December. But the company said it implemented the surcharge now because of the compliance costs it’s facing ahead of the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate kicking in in 2015.
“The costs associated with ACA compliance could ultimately close our doors,” the sign reads. “Instead of raising prices on our products to generate the additional revenue needed to cover the costs of ACA compliance, certain Gator’s Dockside locations have implemented a 1% surcharge on all food and beverage purchases only.”
If however they drop such a charge on me after I have dined well I can tell you the manager is not going to enjoy my soliloquy that I will preform in a loud and boisterous manner!

I’ve packed my own lunch everyday for decades and we eat dinner at home most of the time. So I do have a choice.
We do not frequent restaurants. Most of the time we eat very well and cheaply at home, and always like the house wine list. ;)
Beats putting up with lazy/inattentive servers, overpriced food, and meals of marginal quality. (Many restaurants get everything in bulk from large food distributors, and I know people who work for the suppliers who have interesting tales to tell.)
There may not be any such thing as a money tree, but eating home cooked meals can certainly save a great deal of money.

Okay, thanks for the reply. I see this in a completely different way. I see this fighting government expansion. Assuming that the business owner’s costs increase, he has a few options. One, fold that cost into the price of menu items, and help hide the cost, or break it out and let people see what they’re voting for.
Or if he is some kind of benevolent weirdo he can absorb the cost and reduce his own revenue. If he were to do that, it would mean to admit he had been over charging all along. I suppose he could also make portion sizes smaller, which is how a lot of companies maintain a price point in the face of rising costs.
Why? They are being honest and whether they list it or not all businesses will be adding the charge to your final bill in order to pay for it.
But you see, not only are you paying your ACA insurance you’re also subsiding the restaurant’s too. It’s a mess and I think it’ll get worse. The end of March beginning of April should have some surprises for the 0bama regime.
The thing is not only are you paying your own ACA premium you are also paying/subsidizing theirs as well. I’m pretty sure there are signs to the effect that this will be added to your bill.
Needs to be upwards of 50% before the sheep get excited....

But their property tax more than makes up for it. Just like Texas. Gotta look at the entire picture when looking at tax costs in each state.

I’d be more likely to. This restaurant is being honest about its Obamacare costs. Not to mention they are making a point.
paying taxes for money you want to spend is a world of difference from being forced to pay it as you make it. in no-income tax states at least you have a chance to avoid some of it.

If not for Obamacare, this whole thing would not even be an issue. And things could get much worse; through executive orders, agency “rule making”, and other forms of unilateral decisions who knows what’s coming down the pike? Its a confusing mess.
I appreciate other posters’ point of view. To be sure, running a business is hard enough without the government adding to the burden.
