Now former coach Barry Switzer says he'd 'never recruit a white quarterback'
Fox Sports ^ | 2/27/2014 | Sam Gardner

Just a day after raising eyebrows by calling Johnny Manziel an "arrogant little prick" on a St. Louis radio station, Barry Switzer is back in the headlines, this time for saying he would never recruit a white quarterback.

The former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys coach made the comment during an interview on WNSR in Nashville on Thursday as part of a response to a question about whether he would want Manziel in his backfield.

Specifically, the question was, "If you are a coach in the NFL at this point in time — we know your opinion on Johnny and his mental state on and off the field, but we also know how much you think of him as a football player — is this a guy, in Johnny Manziel, that you would draft or you would want your team to draft, and would you have him as your starting quarterback on your roster?"

Switzer is lucky he inherited Troy Aikman and the rest of Jimmy's team. Within a couple of years of Switzer's "leeadership" the Cowboys got bad and have never reached the level of the team he inherited.

And who's team did Jimmy inherit?

Barry Switzer’s NFL career coaching the Cowboys who had won two Superbowls in a row right before he was hired:

1994 12-4
1995 12-4 Won Superbowl
1996 10-6
1997 6-10 Fired

After he was fired no one else would hire him.

He won the Cowboys last Superbowl and was a college football buddy of Jones while at Arkansas. I doubt he regrets hiring him.

Sounds to me like in his own crude way he’s trying to endear himself to the sports journalism community.

The demise of the Cowboys rests squarely on the shoulders of Jerry Jones period!
As for Switzer’s comment. It was stupid and he should have kept it to himself. That being said, I think he was talking about the type of offense he ran at Oklahoma, and if that was his intent Barry was mostly correct. Manziel couldn’t run the Tripple Option Wish Bone the same way J.C. Watts, or Jamiel Holloway did. That’s not Johnny Football’s type of game.
Now for my opinion on Manziel: I don’t think he will be a very good NFL QB. He is Tim Tebow in different wrapping paper. His mechanics are terrible. That and he is a 1st class prick.

“And who’s team did Jimmy inherit?”

Jimmy Johnson inherited a losing team that he rebuilt with mostly new players he selected.

Jimmy Johnson’s coaching record with the Cowboys:

1989 1-15
1990 7-9
1991 11-5
1992 13-3 Won Superbowl
1993 12-4 Won Superbowl

Switzer and Thompson are not enemies. If you really want to know who Switzer is then read “Bootlegger’s Boy”

I think if Jimmy Johnson would have stayed with the Cowboys, they would have surely won another Superbowl, maybe two. Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson’s egos were both too big to coexist, running the same team. It would be very interesting to see how that Cowboys team would do against the better teams today. I think they would definitely win against Seattle. Erik Williams, Larry Allen, and Nate Newton would eat that Seahawks pass rush for lunch.(maybe literally in Erik William’s case lol)

Blame Jerry for the sad state of the Cowboys, not of their coaches (past or present.)

As for Manziel, Barry nailed it.......he is an arrogant little prick. He may be good at college ball, remains to be seen about the Pros, but a prick nonetheless.

Don’t understand his comment on recruiting QBs. Context?

Jimmy didn’t inherit a very good team. Landry’s last years were craptastic. Give credit where it’s due. Jimmy Johnson built a great team, and it wasn’t just Aikman, Smith, and Irving. He built some damn good defenses. What Jerry Jones did to Tom Landry by firing him the way he did was inexcusable, but that wasn’t Jimmy’s fault.

I have no idea what Thompson and Switzer’s relationship is but Thompson absolutely destroys him in his book.

Jerry Jones made the mistake of thinking he was the reason the Cowboys won a Superbowl while coached by Jimmy Johnson when eveyone else knew they won in spite of Jerry Jones.

No one ever ran the wishbone better than Jack Mildren. I remember when Oklahoma beat a very good Auburn team, Mildren ran the offense to absolute perfection.

That opinion is what made it so fun to be an OU fan when Switzer coached. He just kicked people’s butts. You may not like him but he won bigtime. And BTW he only had the top rated recruiting class once in his carrer.
