16.25 Our correspondent in Simferopol, Roland Oliphant, says Russian troops have moved into Crimea in what Moscow is calling a mission to “protect Black Sea Fleet’s positions”

15.50 BREAKING: The Russian foreign ministry has admitted that armoured units from the Black Sea Fleet base near Sevastopol had entered Crimea in order to protect fleet positions.

The Ukrainian side was also passed a note regarding the movement of armoured vehicles of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea, which is happening in full accordance with the foundation Russian-Ukrainian agreements on the Black Sea Fleet,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Friday afternoon.

In the same note the Russian foreign ministry said it had declined a Ukrainian request for “bilateral consultations” on events in Crimea because they are “the result of recent internal political processes in Ukraine.”

Putin is operating indirectly, propping up local separatist forces and creating chaos.

Russia can technically say it is keeping its word to the West.

But its also demonstrating to Kiev’s new rulers their freedom is on a very short leash indeed.

Russia has ways of bringing Ukraine to heel short of outright war. Never underestimate the Russian Bear.

http://thehill.com/blogs/global-affairs/europe/199571-white-house-dismisses-yanukovych#.UxDgO-HP1L0.twitter#ixzz2ue7N3bXy

The White House on Friday voiced “deep concern” over reports that armed forces were patrolling a pair of airports in Ukraine’s Crimean region.

The reports have intensified concerns that the Russian military might be acting within the former Soviet republic.

“We’ve made clear that the United States supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the sovereignty of Ukraine,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said Friday. “And we have made clear to Russia that we believe it would be a grave mistake to intervene in any way.”
Carney also dismissed comments made by Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych at a press conference in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, 40 miles from the border.

During the press conference, Yanukovych accused the U.S. and other Western powers of a “gangster coup.”

“The disturbances and victims are the consequences of the political crisis, the result of the irresponsible policies of the West, which encouraged the [opposition movement] Maidan,” Yanukovych said.

Carney said Yanukovych had abandoned his responsibilities in Kiev and suggested he had forfeited his legitimacy by fleeing.

According to multiple media reports, dozens of armed and masked men seized government administration buildings and airports in the Crimean region, where pro-Russian sentiment is high. The move came a day after Russia performed military exercises near the border with Ukraine, and pro-Western leaders in Kiev suggested the forces could be Russian soldiers.

“There have been some reports that suggest intervention, and we’re concerned about those,” Carney said.

The White House spokesman said Russian military movement would be “inconsistent” with Moscow’s international obligations, and called on Russia to “respect” Ukrainian sovereignty. He added that the U.S. was “seeking clarification” on the situation, and that the administration was “very focused” on helping nurture a transitional government in Ukraine.

Exclusive: Russian ‘Blackwater’ Takes Over Ukraine Airport

The troops who have taken over two airports in Crimea are not Russian military, but they could be security contractors working for the Russian military, and they are there to stay.

“I think break up of Yugolsvia all over again.”

The old commies, the USSR and now maybe the new Russia seem to enjoy breaking up countries into North/South, East/West South and North Viet Nam, Korea, China and into other divisions.

You knew this was coming.

Yes, but how will it end?

Kerry, in comments that highlighted Washington’s rising suspicion of Moscow, said the U.S. is watching to see if Russian activity in Crimea “might be crossing a line in any way.” He added that the administration would be “very careful” in making judgments about that.

“While we were told that they are not engaging in any violation of the sovereignty and do not intend to, I nevertheless made it clear that could be misinterpreted at this moment,” Kerry said. “There are enough tensions that it is important for everybody to be extremely careful not to inflame the situation and not send the wrong messages.”

Nothing. Just as he promised Medvedev on a hot mic before the 2012 elections. This will pave the way for Poland, Romania, and other countries to rush back into the Bear’s arms.

“After the Russian Army invaded the nation of Georgia, Senator Obama’s reaction was one of indecision and moral equivalence, the kind of response that would only encourage Russia’s Putin to invade Ukraine next.” - Sarah Palin

I wasn't a die hard fan with her hooking up with McCain.

She is no dummy, though, in the area of foreign policy. It was complete BS how the media made fun of her for the whole bordering Russia comment. She probably was briefed on Russian activities in it's Far East when she was governor as much as the assclowns in DC.

There’ll be a meeting but no resolution can pass. As a permanent member, Russia has the veto.

She is actually the smart one here, everything she said about that assclown Obama has turned out to be true..I wonder if the media will apologize to Sarah for being proven right..AGAIN..nah, of course not, they will talk about some bridge in New Jersey because obviously that is WAY more important than talking about Russia trying to take over Ukraine
