I figured it was some kind of sniper rifle. Thanks. Would still love to have one...my other one was lost in a boating accident.

It doesn’t look that cold.
Facial recognition software necessitates such precaution more than ever before.
Depends how long you have to stand around outside.
The civilians have open jackets and no hats. No self respecting ruskie would wear a balaclava when it’s 45 degrees outside.
Right now, it’s 47* F, going down to 42*F overnight. Not terribly cold, by sub-arctic standards; but cold enough, if you have to stand around in it all day. There’s also a wind of 10 mph, so there’s a bit of wind chill.
If I found myself near Balaklava, Ukraine in the winter, I’d probably consider wearing a balaklava.
The average temperature here for the past 3 months has been 4 degrees F. I go skiing every other day. I’ve been ice fishing twice. I have not worn a face mask once this winter.

O.K. Your original point was that they were masked — like a SWAT team, perhaps. Maybe the Russian soldiers were told to conceal their identies; but, if so, that rule seems to be more honoured in the breach than in the observance. Most of the Russians pictured are bare faced. One expects better discipline from the likely future villians, in countless Hollywood action ficks.
LOL!!!
They are just taking back what is theirs,
no way will Russia give it up since it's their only access to the Mediterranean and the Southern Atlantic that they have.
