U.S. officials lean toward 'those in the cockpit' behind missing flight

Washington (CNN) -- U.S. intelligence officials are leaning toward the theory that "those in the cockpit" -- the pilots of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 -- were deliberately responsible for the mysterious disappearance of the commercial jetliner, a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the latest thinking told CNN on Saturday.

The revelation followed news that Malaysian authorities searched the home of the lead pilot, a move that came the same day that Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters the plane veered off course due to apparent deliberate action taken by somebody on board.

The Malaysian government had been looking for a reason to search the home of the pilot and the co-pilot for several days. But it was only in the last 24 to 36 hours when radar and satellite data came to light that authorities believed they had sufficient reason to go through the residences, according to the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The Malaysians don't do this lightly," the official said. It's not clear whether the Malaysian government believes one or both the men could have been responsible for whatever happened to the plane when the Boeing 777-200 ER disappeared March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The official emphasized no final conclusions have been drawn and all the internal intelligence discussions are based on preliminary assessments of what is known to date. Other scenarios could still emerge. A source close to the investigation told CNN that Malaysian police had search the home of pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53. Shah lives in an upscale gated community in Shah Alam, outside Malaysia's capital of Kuala Lumpur.

Two vans were loaded with small bags, similar to shopping bags, at the home of the co-pilot, 27-year-old Farq Ab Hamid.

My first guess was pilot suicide. We remember EgyptAir Flight 990 when First Officer Gameel Al-Batouti began saying, “Tawakkalt ala Allah” (I rely on God), took the airline off autopiolet and shut down the engines. All 217 aboard perished.

Notice the names of the Captain and the First Officer: Zaharie Ahmad Shah and Fariq Ab Hamid. They resemble Muslim names. Could they have been involved in some Jihad involving a suicide mission like EgyptAir Flight 990’s First Officer Gameel Al-Batouti?

The erratic flight where MH 370 altered course several times and went from 40,000 ft to 23,000 ft several times causes me to speculate they were killing off the passengers from oxygen deprivation and trying to throw off efforts at tracking their course—all before their ultimate suicide.

Some speculate the plane was taken to some unknown country and landed. What use would such do anyone? If a group wanted a jet, they can buy one. And, they don’t need a jet the size of a 777.

Interesting that some of the new information says that the co-pilot, who was already questionable because of the incident last year when he let two females into the cockpit for awhile, was just learning to fly the 777, with most of his previous experience with the plane coming in a simulator - this would jibe with what a pilot on CNN said yesterday about his belief that some of the wild changes in altitude shown by the plane suggested that someone not very familiar with actually flying it - maybe someone who had just learned about it on a simulator - was at the controls - this was a prelude to the possibility that one so inexperienced with the plane might eventually lose control altogether and dump it in the ocean.....

Pilot had 3 kids. Reported to be newly seperated from wife and kids. CoPilot was just engaged to be married.

I think you are spot on.
Co-pilot is unfamiliar with the plane brings a couple of hotties into the cockpit. Someone bumps the controls sending it to 45k, lack of oxygen makes everybody woozy, maybe some attempt to correct the problem. Finally pilot and co succumb and the plane flies on happily in which ever direction it was last pointing.

But that doesn’t explain deliberately turning off the communication devices. Even if one of them was despondent and was committing suicide why would he not want the wreckage found? Why would he turn off coms and change direction?

Nope, it looks like this plane will be used for nefarious use or at least that was the plan. It still may be found in the water because of miscalculation.

Yeah I agree the plan at least was to use it for some nefarious scheme - difficult to see why it wasn’t destroyed as soon as it was taken over if it were a suicide move, and it now seems likely there were at least two people involved (probably would have taken that many to cut off some of the communications, which were apparently reachable only in a compartment in the belly of the plane) , and it’s difficult to see two people taking part in a suicide move - but it’s still possible that it crashed by accident on the way to wherever it was going if the person at the controls wasn’t that experienced - may never know......
