In the wake of a March 16 referendum in which Crimeans voted to join the Russian Federation, Ukrainian leaders refused to cede any part of the peninsula, calling on their troops to prepare for war.
"Crimea was, is, and will be our territory," said Defense Minister Ihor Tenyukh in a statement delivered at the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center on March 17.
Former heavyweight boxing champion and leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform Vitali Klitschko announced that Ukrainian troops would remain at their bases, even after March 21, the end of a peace treaty signed by the interior ministries of Ukraine and Russia.

Obama is a pansy, he wont do anything
Obama talks loudly and carries no stick.
news flash, WE are the only ones enslaved.
heck I read the other day, some guy out in the country couldn’t even build a stock pond without the EPA threatening him with $20,000 a day fines.
Our government is out of control, and is actively pushing abortion and sodomy abroad. Face it, WE are now the evil empire and us conservatives are stuck behind enemy lines.
well since 90%+ of the population of Crimea wants nothing to do with the rioters that took over Kiev... I imagine the only ones holding guns behind every blade of grass will be those in Crimea fighting for their freedom from the terrorists in Kiev.
Nope, not once he is awakened from his long winter slumber.
Ukraine owes Russia a pile of money. Putin may very well say “pay up or give up”.
How long until China does the same to the US?
Ukraine might want to consider the fate of Fort Sumter: a military presence in a seceded region.
Pulling out may suck mightily, but continued presence is just asking for trouble. Think carefully about whether trouble is desired...
That 90%+ number by itself tells you the vote was bogus. The ballot had two choices, none of which was remaining in Ukraine. If you doubt the bogus vote look up the history of the Tatars and their percentage, 15%, of the population. Don’t forget to look up the percentage of ethnic Ukrainians who live in the Crimea. In a truly honest election my guess is it would have been 50/50. Of course in communist countries the elections usually are a sure thing. North Korea is an example. Dear Leader got 100% of the vote. I imagine every voter showed up for that election too.
Russia has been conducting an extensive propaganda effort leading up to the elctions strarting when the demonstrations got out of hand in their view. Part of that is aimed at convincing us we’re looking at another Iraq or Afghanistan. Ukraine’s could turn out to be another Afghanistan for the Russians.
I say we send the Ukrainians all the weapons left over from Ghadaffi and wish them luck. If our SEALS can interdict an oil tanker at the request of the Libyan government, I think we need a quid pro quo. Turn Ukraine into another Russian Afghanistan, Proxy wars work. We’ve BTDT. We don’t need to put boots on the ground to bleed the Russians.
Problem is: that 90% know choosing sovereign independence will be soon followed by voluntary annexation into a larger state.
I do assume any Texas Freeper understands this.
NATO will fight Russia to the last Pole.
China is not in a position to enforce the second part.
Russia can, in contrast, take total control of Ukraine in a matter of days (and practical control in hours).
Your call but you do it alone.
Takes boots on the ground.
China can’t even get boots on the ground 40 miles away.
There’s a difference between vacating/vaporizing ground vs. occupying it.
Will that be true in 20 years?
Don’t know how many will follow the orders.
Many Ukrainian troops are confused on who is running the show .
Since we invaded Pakistan and killed Osama, that route isn't open any more.
Lets not start another land war in Asia till we find out a way to supply our guys currently there.
funny, I see nothing but happy people in the streetsof Crimea celebrating the vote.
and I see nothing but thugs in Kiev who’ve occupied and burned down the city after deposing the Democratically elected government.
are you sure you are not the one being manipulated by propaganda?
