Doctor: No Such Thing as ADHD
The New American ^ | 18 March 2014 | Selwyn Duke

The child would daydream in class, his elementary-school teachers said. He often just didn’t pay attention the way they would have liked. This was before the age of prevalent ADHD diagnoses and Ritalin, so no remedy was at hand, either. If one had been, though, who knows what he might have been?

Perhaps not co-valedictorian of his school — which he was.

I was that child. And were I attending school today and especially if my behavior had been worse, it’s likely I’d have received that fashionable diagnosis. And why not? It seems everyone now could have ADHD.

This point is made by Dr. Richard Saul, who has been practicing behavioral neurology for 50 years and is the author of the new book ADHD Does Not Exist. In a March 14 Time piece he writes:

There was Ritalin. This drug has been in use for about 80 years. Prior to that, they noted that giving some hyperactive kids coffee seemed to ‘calm their nerves’, and it was caffeine that was the drug indicated for this condition for a very long time.

The drug effects the central brain area, which is the area responsible for focus, screening out and/or prioritizing sensory stimuli.

Ritalin is one of the most studied and documented medications ever. It leaves no traces of itself, and unlike caffeine, does not produce withdrawal symptoms in patients who use it for the appropriate conditions.

In people who do not have issues with respect to the central brain, the drug has the opposite effect - causing alertness and general hyperactivity. This makes it one of the most commonly abused drugs prescribed.

It doesn’t take a doctor to spot a kid who MIGHT benefit from either coffee in the AM or Ritalin. A teacher could pull it off, and there have been teachers that have served coffee, or Mt. Dew to these kids and got the desired effect.

Grades improved, discipline incidents decreased, etc.

It doesn’t work for every sh!tass walking the street, but it when it fails the price of failure is some extra calories.

I’m a huge proponent of iodine as well so thanks for posting the reference to Dr. Brownstein’s book on it up thread.

Iodine is incredible and we are all HUGELY deficient. This is why they call the Midwest in and around Michigan the goiter belt!! LOL

That means nothing. German fighter pilots during WWII were given drugs that improved their stamina and concentration, but that didn’t mean they had a problem.

Anyway, the point is not that there aren’t a group of behaviors and “symptoms” associated with so-called ADHD, but that they’re a function of bad parenting. And they are.

Why don’t you try developing faith? True belief in Jesus is the best cure for anxiety there has ever been.

Funny, there was no ADHD when I was a kid. Maybe it’s because there was no Ritalin.

Ritalin has been around since the 1950's a. But it wasn't widely used until the 1990's. ADD ADHD has been a diagnoses since the 1950's or 60's. What hasn't been known is the fact there is a very similar medical condition often caused by sinus allergies, ear infections etc that can mimic ADD ADHD. The behavioral triggers come from auditory and /or optic sensory processing issues. The technological increases have brought about an epidemic of sorts of ADD/ADHD behavior. The good news is Ritalin is not a medication needed to treat it but rather treating the underlying medical cause.

ADD ADHD is real although not near as common as diagnosed IMO. CAPD on the other hand is very under diagnosed. It can be helped with classroom modifications when kids are in school. Kids with CAPD are often thought not to be paying attention. For example you tell a kid take out the trash and get the mail. The kids a person may think is ignoring them. The command is repeated Take out the trash and bring in the mail. The kid says "Huh" as if just now hearing you. You repeat it a third time and the kid in mid sentence seems to suddenly hear and understand what is being said. Well that's because they are just processing what was said the first or second time. It's common in adults as well.

The auditory and optic bombardment upon the sensory processing system in many cases a damaged one is the triggering device behind it. Much of such technology did not exist before even the 1980's.

You are doing it right.

I try to reserve "nasty" for those more interested in winning than substantive debate, or in this case, justifying past actions.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't ask: do you, or did you, hold a full time job while parenting your daughter?

I believe parents HATE children and want them to sit there like zombies so they invented ADHD to drug them.

You did not say, "Parents who drug their children and/or believe they have ADHD hate their children", you said, "I believe parents HATE children and want them to sit there like zombies so they invented ADHD to drug them."

Ritalin has also been illegal in Sweden since 1971.

"We have chosen to treat him with diet and exercise and not drugs. We now eat a clean diet; i.e. no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, etc. We make almost all of our food from scratch. We are so much healthier as a result."

Good parents here. We are still in the dark ages regarding brain allergies. See: "Is This Your Child," by Dr. Doris Rapp, a pioneer in this field.

Some children are allergic to milk. One quick test devised by Dr. Rapp is the handwriting test. After eliminating milk from the child's diet for a week, look at his handwriting before and after.

but they sure drugged a lot of little boys and the drug companies sure made a lot of money, and the docs got kickbacks too.

all you m-fers out there saying we have to listen to medical experts and take vaxes and take all these drugs b/c they’re altruistically pure, always right and we’re stupid, go eff yourselves.

they are PEOPLE and fallible and I only get one body to live in, you and them don’t give a sh1t about my health as much as i do, if anything you want to force me to risk my health taking things i don’t want to take, just to make you think you’re safer. i don’t have an obligation to risk my health to calm your anxieties, and i don’t force you to take stuff you don’t want to take.
