I think I read that the B777 is 209 ft long. This debris is approaching half the length of the plane.

It’s also bigger than the wingspan of Amelia Earhart’s plane, and much larger than Jimmy Hoffa so those are out.

You must have been on same site. Is it floating? Too big for a wing? Anyone got the de mentions of 777?

60.9m wingspan, 6.2m fuselage diameter... wing root-tip ~27m... that is pretty close to 24m... especially if estimating something that is partially submerged. obviously could be a major portion of the fuselage.

That part of the ocean is around 3 to 4 miles deep and is hit by hurricane force winds and seas every 4 or 5 days. It would be closer to Antarctica than Australia.

I stand corrected on the wingspan... forgot this was a -300ER

The -300ER has a slightly larger wingspan (64.8m)

1st on goggle search page

More info down thread on plane size.

Don’t know about floaters or not.

Would be about right for a wing.

If it turns out to be a positive ID, it only deepens the mystery. If it had gone north, we would have a good idea what it was all about - piracy, terrorism, hostages, etc. This, it makes no sense. Why fly all the way to the southern ocean? It must have just ran out of fuel. What happened?

This area seems way outside the range of the aircraft for the fuel load it had.

Either the fuselage or an abandoned ship from tsunami

And how far might this debris if it is it, drifted from the original place of impact (see comment on the powerful winds that can hit that area). Would they ever be able to find the original spot?

Also, for that size of debris, considering the possibilities, I guess it could be part of an old ship. There aren’t many possibilities.

I dunno... I’ve seen both... given that the Boeing site lists only GE engines for the 300ER, I’m tempted to believe its a 200ER given the discussion of Rolls engine data reports.
