The “hurricane drought” in the U.S. continues, as last year saw the lowest number of hurricanes since 1982, according to government storm data.
For the 2013 hurricane season — which runs from June 1st to November 30th — thirteen named storms formed in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Only two of those storms reached hurricane strength, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The National Hurricane Center reports: “BASED ON THE 30-YEAR CLIMATOLOGY… THE AVERAGE LEVEL OF ACTIVITY IN THE BASIN IS 12 NAMED STORMS…6 HURRICANES…AND 3 MAJOR HURRICANES. FOR 2013…THE NUMBER OF NAMED STORMS WAS NEAR AVERAGE…BUT THE NUMBERS OF HURRICANES AND MAJOR HURRICANES WERE WELL BELOW AVERAGE.”

I always ask this question when the MSM begins touting the panicky forecasts of a “potentially devastating” hurricane season every summer:
Have these guys EVER forecast a “below average” hurricane season?
Not to hijack things, but does anybody know the range of joules (or whatever the correct unit is) that the sun’s output varies, v. the same unit for the amount of energy stored and reflected by CO2.
Reasoning is, if the sun’s fluctuations of energy are greater, or far greater, than the energy CO2 forces into the atmosphere, it pretty much makes ‘global warming’ irrelevant.
For whatever reason I can never find any numbers.
The closest I’ve come to a hurricane myself was being in Galveston the day Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The waves were humongous in Galveston and I ended up in a twister (spun off by the storm clouds) while I was inside the 61st Street Pier.
That pier got destroyed in the next hurricane to hit Galveston, but has been rebuilt, from what I hear.
Yes! I think the year you are interested in is 2005. In that year there were so many, they cycled thru the name list to the end, and then had to start at 'A' again. There were 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes. 7 major 'caines. The forecast early that year was *WAY* less than 28.
hmmmm re-reading my reply, I suppose that does not directly answer your question. I don’t know how many were forecast for 2005, and if that was below average. But, the point I’m making is that they can forecast many less than actually occur.
Now now now, you know that the Sun has no effect wharever on the climate. Only your car and BBQ grill can affect the climate. Solar output has nothing to do with it.
I predict that there will be between zero and 365 hurricanes in the Atlantic this year.
I am certain I will be proved correct. The TV channels should pay me :)

Not true. Everything weather can be explained by global warming. Just as the record cold we have had in the north was caused by global warming so will global warming cause the reduction of hurricanes. Further, all changes are bad, real bad. The reduction of hurricanes will be very, very bad for women, children and minorities.

Me - Still think we’re all going to fry to death?
Lib - Well this is still a lot of crazy weather. You have to admit we’ve had a lot of extremes lately because of global warming.

Me - When was the last time you remember a hurricane making landfall...besides Sandy since it wasn’t really a hurricane.

Lib - I don’t know. A lot.
Me - But you can’t remember the last one?
Lib - No.
You get the gist. He still doesn’t believe there haven’t been any major hurricanes...and it would be racist to Google it or something.
Increases polar bears; decreases polar bears.
Increases cloud cover; decreases cloud cover.
Atlantic less salty; Atlantic more salty.
Earth spins slower; earth spins faster.
and so on, and on... and on.
Once upon a time, we studied such things. We even had a big federal agency -- it was called NASA. It studied space and solar emissions, and stuff. But NASA does Nothing About Space Anymore, so we don't pay attention to the Sun now. Some people used to think the Sun was the great driver of the earth's weather, but we now know that cars determine our weather, and always have. So we have no need to study the sun's output. What would be the point??
