PORTER HEIGHTS, TX (KTRK) -- A 64-year-old woman opened fire and killed a man she says was trying to get into her Montgomery County home. According to an HFD spokesperson, that man happened to be a Houston firefighter and he may have been at the woman's house by mistake.

According to investigators, a 64-year-old woman was home alone on Monday night when she says she heard a noise and saw a man outside. Deputies say the woman claims she told that guy to leave and shot him twice as he attempted to enter the house.

"(The) person then attempted to gain entry into the house," said Sgt. Dan Zienteck with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. "She fired twice through the door, striking the person. The sheriff's office and EMS responded. The suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital and was pronounced dead at the hospital."

We've learned the man was her neighbor, Samuel Keen, 27. Detectives say the three year veteran Houston firefighter was out drinking with his friends at a bar in south Montgomery County Monday night. They say he took a taxi home and they believe he was intoxicated when he approached his neighbor's home.

If you are drunk, and your key does not work, do not try to break down the door. You may be at the wrong house, and your attempt may prove fatal.

Why wouldn’t the neighbor identify the firefighter through the peephole instead of shooting first and asking questions later? Now she’s going to be the neighborhood leper.

“They say he took a taxi home and they believe he was intoxicated when he approached his neighbor’s home.”

For whatever reason, perhaps by mistake or negligence, the taxi driver dropped the firefighter off at the wrong house. Did the firefighter direct the driver to the wrong house or did the taxi driver not stop and drop off his passenger and the correct address?

I'm kinda fond of my right eye. Maybe she is too. I would maybe wait for the sound of splintering wood.

Can someone please explain why the headline has to identify him as a “firefighter”? He wasn’t acting in any capacity of a firefighter nor representing the fire dept at the time. His occupation should have nothing to do with it.

He was a drunk intruder who was shot while trying to break into someone else’s house.

The “firefighter” part should be a minor description, if even that, at the bottom of the story. NOT the headline. “He was employed by the XYZ Fire Dept.”

If he was a “massage therapist” or a “grocery clerk” or a myriad other non-descript professions, would the headline of the story be written the same way?

Sheesh! Today’s urinalism.

even drunk, how could you go to the wrong house and insist on breaking in? If he was married, and trying to sneak in late, you still couldn’t figure out it was the wrong house?
I would like to see a pic of the houses to see if they are townhouses all alike.

She determined that she did not know him and told him to leave.

Nice slant to this thing. It makes it sound like "Hero Firefighter" was trying to get into the home in to course of his duties and crazy lady shot him

Instead it was drunken lout trying to break in and elderly lady protecting herself.

Because the mediots insist that all “first responders” are somehow heroes.

A genuine tragedy.

I live in a condo complex, five floors, unit 205. Twice, I’ve gone to 305 and worked the key in frustration, then my other key, then my wife’s key. Finally, to our amazement my upstairs neighbor opens the door and we have a good laugh. A month later he does the same thing to me. Another laugh.

I don’t own a firearm but support those who do, as they ultimately protect me and my family; but this is a danger that can’t be taken lightly.

Let’s see now ... nighttime, distorted view through the peephole, perhaps superannuated eyes ... kinda hard to make a positive ID.

A good point.

This is how firefighters cost $250,000 per year at many locations. They are given these salaries and benefits because the other party is owned by their union and the public's perception of "hero" can't be swayed.

On the other hand, the applicant pool is long and deep for these positions and cost could be reduced significantly.

The woman told authorities she was alone in her brick home in the 20600 block of
Youpon Lane when she heard a noise about 9:30 p.m. and saw the figure of a man
through her opaque glass door.

She said she ordered the man to leave, telling him she was armed and would shoot if
he kept trying to come in.

No charges have been filed at this time but the case will be presented to the
Montgomery County Grand Jury, Fitzgerald said.

Yeah, from the headline I pictured a home burning home, a firefighter trying to break down the door to gain access, and the occupant shooting him.

I guess I was off a bit.

That’s probably what the headline writer wanted you to think.

Shooting through the door is not a good idea except in the most dire of circumstances.
