RATCLIFFE, Texas — Deep in the back woods of South Texas, you never know what might be lurking around the corner, or in your tree.
“He saw this strange animal up here eating corn,” Jackie Stock said.
In Ratcliffe, a small town in DeWitt County, residents are certain they've found the mythical, despicable chupacabra, and this time, it's alive.
Ratcliffe Resident Jackie Stock said her husband caught the creature Sunday night.
“He called me to come and look, and I said ‘Bubba that looks like a baby chupacabra,’” Stock said.
With its hairless back, large claws, countless teeth and ferocious growl, many would say this animal fits the bill.
“I hunted coons for 20 years with dogs and I ain’t ever seen anything that looks like that right there,” Ratcliffe resident Arlen Parma said.
Parma said one of the biggest signs it's not a raccoon is its growl.
“A coon doesn’t make that noise, or a possum. What makes that noise? I guess a chupacabra does,” Parma said.
Most people in DeWitt County are convinced this is the elusive chupacabra, but what do wildlife experts have to say?
“The animal in the cage as best I can tell from the view is some sort of a small canine,” Brent Ortego, Wildlife Diversity Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife, said.
Ortego said a canine can include a coyote, dog, or even a fox. He said the animal most likely has mange which has caused it to lose its hair. But as for a chupacabra, he thinks otherwise.
“It's never been proven to be a unique species. It was always something out there that allegedly was said to cause harm to people or livestock,” Ortego said.
Chupacabra or not, right now this little guy is staying at the Stock household, living off a diet of cat food and corn, at least until someone can find out what it really is.
“We were just trying to figure out what it is because we've never seen anything like it before,” Stock said.

The people I bought my pup from, raise nothing but daschunds. Miniatures, red, black and short or long hair. I know them and we all use the same vet.
Some years ago I ran into them at a store and i had my dog with me. I was complaining about his constant itching and scabs, and he told me they had put down my dogs sire because of the problem, which was diagnosed by the vet as a grass allergy that they tried but could not treat. The sire was about 8 years old..
Well....I did not believe it was a grass allergy, but i knew the dog have immune responses to flea collars and treatments. So I assumed the sire did as well and began trying to find the causes with no success until last year when I took the dog with me for a extended trip and spent every day with him trying to cure his allergy to permethrine using graduated doses.
It was then that I noted that the dog was getting better yet there were no fleas before or after, and there was plenty of allergens and grass.
I also noticed that I was being bit by (no-seeums) lol
The bite triggered a massive immune response in me as well.
Anyway....I never took the dog back to the vet, but I took a sample of a scab. He told me it was the same mite that can often cause scabies in humans but he said it was one of two. One cannot breed on a human but bites them and the other causes scabies.
So that's the rest of the story and I believe it might be the same issue affecting many animals yet improperly diagnosed..

I have to agree. I’ve caught countless dozens of them in traps. They do indeed growl (and hiss, etc), some really weird sounds too. I’ve also skinned a thousand of these boogers. That is a sick raccoon no doubt about it

I buy it at the local pet/farm store but you can order it online, too.
One of my Ibizans had a trashed immune system and she got demodectic mange because of that.
[all dogs have mange mites...healthy dogs are not affected]
She went through every fix the vet could muster.
Shampoos, lotions, sprays, pills..just everything.
Somebody in a pit bull forum put me onto the Nu-Stock and I read the customer testimonies which, frankly, sounded loony.
Within 24 hours of her first application, she grew peach fuzz on her previously leathery, naked skin.
Within 2 weeks, all her hair was back.

The dog can deliver a nasty bite and when I took Barkley in to him for the last time, he wanted me to hold him down as his assistant was not there so I volunteered, but i did not have to hold him down, they don't like that and they will bite you...lol..
So all I had to do was talk to him and rub his ears..vet got the shots in and that was that...but that vet was scared to death of that dog..
Walmart used to carry a hot spot treatment,(sulfa) but they don't have it anymore...and I forgot about the farm store..

I trapped and relocated the family on my property, all except the grand dad. Poor things, most were terrified of me. They have great sense of smell and the only time they calmed down was at release when they’d smell the other members of their family in the area. I’d feed them hot dogs and pasta before release to give them a head start in their new area.
This thing has raccoon hands but the ears are way too big.
On a side note, Hartz flea shampoo had to change their label because it once included it also got rid of lice. People who didn’t want to be seen buying Rid shampoo would buy the dog shampoo and, ya know, we can’t have that.
Flea-dip and a good blow-dry and it’ll be alright.
