Another controversy has erupted over a Sellwood-Moreland business, this one over the owner’s views on gays and same-sex marriage.

Facebook and other social media sites have exploded over a soon-to-open fresh meat and vegetable store called Moreland Farmers Pantry. Neighbors and nearby business owners, once excited by the prospect of the new shop, are now backing away.

“They’re choosing to open a business in a very open-minded neighborhood,” said Tom Brown, owner of Brown Properties and president of the Sellwood Moreland Business Alliance. “I think their personal views are going to hurt.”

They ARE open-minded. Just so long as you believe the same as them.

Upon assault by the gay lobby, business owners should immediately post signs offering a 10% discount on products/services for traditional marriage supporters.

Repeat as needed.

Is there a race to see who can be more outraged?

The tree huggers are outraged about any sort of energy that is effective.

The gays are outraged about any belief system that doesn't endorse their way of life.

The feminists are outraged about any woman holding a conservative view.

The muslims are outraged that the rest of us breathe.

So the shop is unwelcome because the owners religious views differ from those of the neighbors?
How does this differ from the shop being unwelcome because the owner’s skin color differs from the neighborhood’s?
Does the left intend to create a ghetto for Christians?

To the extent that homosexuals and supporters of homosexual marriage want to refuse to do business with the store, I have no objection. If they want to go beyond not doing business and try to force the business to close via intimidation or political pressure - and the article doesn’t mention any - then they are wrong.

Yep, they’re so “open-minded” they simply won’t tolerate dissent. But who says leftists ever had a smidgen of sanity?

You are right as to debate tactics, so far as your defined situation. But the other side of the argument as to debate tactics is that to argue only from the point that the present homosexual demands are in clear defiance of logic & reason--as they clearly are--is to surrender the religious argument since Genesis.

The reality is that both arguments are essential. Why? Because those who will be persuaded by one, may not be persuaded by the other. There are people with strong reasoning ability. There are others who may lack strong reasoning ability, and need to rely on established guidelines.

Taking your point to the exclusion of all others, is analogous to suggesting that Lot should have gone out into the street to reason with the mob, demanding that he send out his visitors, for the mob's enjoyment.

The real point that should always be included in the argument is that everyone should have the right to decide on whatever basis the decider selects--so long as he does not overtly injure another--on with whom he wants to associate, or identify with, or do business with. This, now often enforced, denial of such right is a direct contradiction of the concept of personal liberty--a concept that should be defended, not abandoned.

Conservatives, who embrace the "Civil Rights" Acts of the 1960s, whether from guilt or confusion spawned in their school years, have abandoned concepts of personal freedom that were once sacred to free peoples. Yes, the present onslaught is an extension--but not in logic. The extension is merely in adding more categories favored for the special privilege of forcing others to accept you against their will, in business dealings.

(article rewritten for clarity)

Owner’s race cause furor over soon-to-open Sellwood grocery store

Another controversy has erupted over a Sellwood-Moreland business, this one over the owner’s race.

Facebook and other social media sites have exploded over a soon-to-open fresh meat and vegetable store called Moreland Farmers Pantry. Neighbors and nearby business owners, once excited by the prospect of the new shop, are now backing away from the idea of a black owned business in their neighborhood.

“They’re choosing to open a business in a very open-minded neighborhood,” said Tom Brown, owner of Brown Properties and president of the Sellwood Moreland Business Alliance. “I think their being Negroes is going to hurt.”

Recently, neighbors found Facebook postings by owner Chauncy Childs that brought them up short. She wrote a long post about her opposition to racial segregation, complaining that “a tiny minority of racists is dictating our social structure.” She also posted an article, written by someone else, supporting the right of businesses to serve black people.

She said she believes that segregation is wrong because it is the start of a slippery slope that could eventually lead to the persecution of black people. But she said those are her private religious beliefs and don’t reflect how the store will operate.

About two years ago, Sellwood neighbors raised a storm of protest over a business that offered services to Mexicans and Chinese. The business eventually moved.

Beth Ramsey, who runs White Is All Right, a Beauty Parlor in Sellwood, said she was initially excited about the prospect of shopping at the new store but now doubts she will go in.

“I’m disappointed,” said Ramsey, who is white. “It’s not like a boycott kind of energy. But I don’t need black people to have my money.”

Ramsey said she is a bit surprised by Childs’ naivete, not just about Facebook but also about the neighborhood she picked.

“This neighborhood is like Mayberry. Everybody knows everybody. Everybody is talking to everybody. Everybody is white.”

"open minded" does not mean "open minded".

It's Newspeak for: You must tolerate us, but we don't have to tolerate you.

Hopefull, some more instances like this and people will start to clue in on all this closed-minded open-mindedness.

Your right in that by simple logic hetro and homo are not that same..but my main gripe is with libertarians because homosexual marriage is not libertarian or shouldn't be

Do a simple test
If a government bad homosexual acts would at most be tyranny over a minority ...ban heterosexual acts and at minimum it would be genocide of all humanity...

Heterosexually is a requirement of life like air and water..homosexual a preference like beer and cigarettes..they are not equal in necessity

a prohibition on beer and cigarettes is not equal to a prohibition on air and water now from a libertarian perspective you might say I don't believe the government has the right to prohibit it either ...that's fine..

but to prohibit is different than to provide and promote to provide and promote clean air and public water is not equal of providing in promoting beer and cigarettes to the public.

To say a government should not prohibit is what the left calls a negative right to say the government must provide and promote is with the left called a positive right.

so why are libertarians saying that the government must provide a positive right of marriage?...a libertarian is about negative rights prohibiting the government for getting involved not about the government promoting in providing.

funny I think the new Noah movie might be the most a great teacher of hetro and homo sex

the movie leftest twist of the story is save the animals and kill off mankind...so what goes on the boat?..hetro pairs of everything Noah loves and want to save...

but as for mankind that the left new Noah hates and wants to see die out..he wants no fertile female to survive..it effect his want is homo pairs for man..because man must die out....funny ..I do see a connection in thinking

homosexual marriage will always be a legislative fiction like adoption. It has to be narrowly construed since it is not a inalienable right but rather a fiction based on behavior. (homosexual marriage is no different than legalizing animal sex or prostitution.)

It is just basic statutory construction.
