Tea Party Tested: In One Month, Establishment on Defense

A seven-week gauntlet of Republican Senate primaries kicking off next month will decide the fate of the tea party’s success this year.

If a Republican senator loses a primary this year, it will more than likely occur in a span of nominating contests premiering in one month. Incumbents got the boot thanks to tea-party-backed hopefuls in both 2010 and 2012, and those lesser known Republican nominees went on to both triumphs and failures.

In the third election cycle since the rise of the tea party, fundraising and organization remain significant hurdles for anti-establishment candidates. The outside groups helping to fuel many of the primary campaigns concede they are realistic about their slim chances against incumbents and mainstream Republican candidates.

Still, tea party organizers said they remain hopeful about picking off a few House seats and perhaps a couple Senate seats in their continued pursuit of increased congressional influence.

“Some of our guys could lose, many of them could lose. We understand that,” said Daniel Horowitz of the Madison Project, which recruits and supports conservative candidates. “We take calculated risks. We want to see a path, but it’s very much an uphill path in many of these races, especially if you’re going up against an incumbent and even some of the open seats where you’re starting out with a lot less money.”

But, Horowitz added, “on a large scale we have already won by forcing most of the incumbents to embrace, at least publicly, many of our policies.”

The races to watch begin May 6 in North Carolina, followed by Nebraska on May 13, Kentucky and Georgia on May 20, Mississippi on June 3 and South Carolina on June 10. South Dakota’s open seat has also invited a June 3 primary with similar dynamics,

Money does not necessarily beat passionate voters in primaries. That’s why GOPe candidates are sweating. Even with Chamber of Amnesty money flowing into their campaigns, TEA Party challengers can prevail if they are as dedicated to conservative principles as TEA Party voters are.

A sleeping giant has been wakened. The Republican establishment has a choice to make, and very soon - either embrace the T.E.A. party and harness the energy they can provide, or find themselves fighting a war on two opposite fronts, caught in the crossfire.

And crossfire can be pretty devastating out there in no-man’s land.

Either take no prisoners, or make an alliance of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” variety.

For the NRC and NRSC and NRCC, the "enemy of my enemy" are the demonCRATS. They consider constitutionalists to be the "enemy". And they're RIGHT. And they MUST be defeated and destroyed.

Then why in the heck did Rand Paul endorse Mitch McConnell?

"Money does not necessarily beat passionate voters in primaries"

Incumbentcy is a b!tch my FRiend. Politicians have worked for centuries building up the advantages that accrue to an existing office holder.

And that is precisely where dem. and GOPe politicians have a shared common interest in utter hatred of the TeaParty.

To say we face an up hill battle is an understatement.

When is the LA Primary. That’s one of the “biggies” IMO. I want to see Mary Landrieu GONE!

Exactly. And, anyone who does not believe that, just ask Senator Ted Cruz.

Apparently, LA has a “jungle primary” on November 4th. And then a runoff if no candidate gets above 50%.

So the two top contenders would then go into a runoff on December 6th.

I know that in Louisiana all Candidates, Pubbies and ‘Rats, are on the same Primary Ballot, but, geesh... I didn’t know it was not until November. But, that makes sense because I remember reading that the run-off is in December. So, it could be December before we know who controls the Senate. If control of the Upper Chamber comes down to the LA Senate race; holy cow.... look for a gazillion dollars to be spent on that race.
