What I learned as a liberal talking head on Fox News
Yahoo News ^ | 04/16/2014 | Sally Kohn

For a radical progressive who once harbored negative stereotypes about folks on the right, it was a turning point for me: Though Sean Hannity or Sarah Palin and I disagree profoundly on politics – they're personable, kind, and human. If you want to persuade people, you can’t demonize them.

In the fall of 2013, I gave a TED talk on what I learned as a progressive, on-air talking head at Fox News, where I worked for two years before leaving and joining my current home, CNN. After all, one of the most frequent questions I was asked during my time at Fox was how I did it, how I was a fox in the henhouse – or a hen in the Fox house, if you will.

The questions came mostly from fellow liberals who had not watched much Fox News but had seen the most outlandish clips of Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity that had made it to "The Daily Show" or YouTube. They perhaps imagined that walking down the hallway outside makeup, Mr. O'Reilly might yell then, too, instead of just saying hello. That's a funny notion, but it couldn't be further from the truth.

My time at Fox News was marked by meeting and working with some of the kindest, smartest, and most talented people I've had the pleasure of meeting in life. As I said in my TED talk, Sean Hannity is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet – and even now that I've parted ways with Fox, he remains a good friend and mentor.

My brother-in-law is not into politics enough to say he’s a liberal, but he very much to the left when you start talking to him about economics etc.

At the same time, I don’t know of too many people on this earth that are as decent, hard-working, generous, and family-oriented as him.

Despite alot of his views, he is a stand-up guy and an absolute gem.

RE: Not being a bureaucrat, I have no idea what the hell a TED talk is

From their website:

http://www.ted.com/about/our-organization

Our organization

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

Our Mission: Spread ideas

TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. On TED.com, we’re building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.

In fact, everything we do — from our TED Talks videos to the projects sparked by the TED Prize, from the global TEDx community to the TED-Ed lesson series — is driven by this goal: How can we best spread great ideas?

TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation. Our agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.

I asked in jest. If anyone ever saw her early appearances on FNC sans makeup and dressed like a butch, you know there were a few seconds when your brain had to reset to comprehend why "Sally" looked like that and sounded like that. After a few weeks they softened her image significantly, but they could never wash away the diesel....

To be a leftist you must hate and make war on people, no matter. Also you must be an atheist who thinks he only is truly qualified in religious relations... or need to destroy the religious. Just like the Middle East peace process or Islam is peace, it is not about peace for arabs and jews, it is about that strange man walking on the hill and enforcing peace and Obamacare and what not. It is about him.

Hey look, we think they’re stupid and they think we’re evil. Nothing’s ever going to change.

A step in the right direction for any of us who want to see an end to political hatred. I don’t watch CNN so I cannot judge if her actions match her words. I hope they do.

I’m dubious about what a stock market can do for a company once it’s had its initial public offering. It’s like betting on horses. Betting up a horse does not make the horse go faster. More topical, the horse’s owners don’t benefit from the bets.

Apparently not enough: she's still a liberal.

The oppression of “the nice” is the sublying threat of death condemnation if you do not find them nice.

Sally is still a sucker for introducing that language... or maybe a subverter who is trying to reteach the next Obama a softer approach... beware. i do not trust so called “nice gays”.

She probably won’t want to, once she’s spent some time at the CNN hate-box. She’ll soon lose whatever “respect” she claims to have for people like Hannity.

“...But she deeply believes in finding our common humanity, political differences aside....”

Not a bad goal... it’s just unachievable as long as the leftards act like the intolerant psychotic fascists they admire and want to be.

They need to understand the basic principle of Live and Let Live first, before anything else.

I was visiting my brother’s family in Seattle, a few weeks before the 2008 election. I was playing catch with my nephews, and their pals; one of them asked “you’re voting for Obama, right?”.”No, I don’t think so”, I replied. The older nephew said “My uncle and my grandmother are staunch Republicans”. The kids all stopped dead in their tracks, and looked at me like I was an escaped zoo animal ;)

That would have been a perfect time to educate them on WHY you weren’t voting for him.
