The Yin and The Yang

Putin is trying to build Russia up into his vision of a new Russia.

Obama is dismantling America into his vision of a new USA.

Putin: “First and foremost it is worth acknowledging that the demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”

I’m more worried about what we’re not building. We’re destructing.

The irony here is that the German-Russian trade axis, which between 1870-1914 was one of the world’s most dynamic, is destined to revive. Germany tired of its supplicating, non productive, debt ridden EU partners will pivot toward the boundless resources and potential of Russia. Ukraine , which is positioned directly on the axis along with Poland and Belarus, will prosper as well. A West Ukraine v East Ukraine/Russia war would only benefit those who fear or wish to delay this development.

Vladimir Putin is the best ruler Russia has ever had since Tsar Peter. Bork Obunga on the other hand, is the worst ruler any advanced state has ever had since Nero.

A remarkably plausible interpretation of events. Better be lest we get WWIII.

President Putin really wants to fulfill Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s vision of Europe as a “common European home” from the Atlantic to the Pacific - from Paris to Vladivostok. That dream right now seems further away from fulfillment than in 1989.

The system of the blocs has disappeared and the Cold War has ended but most Russians feel the West is not interested in being a partner but an adversary. And they point out the West’s attitude towards their country and them has remained consistent even before Crimea.

But if its a choice now between deferring to the West or upholding Russia’s national interests - Putin has opted for the second choice. He really wants Russia to be part of Europe - but not at any price.

It may be true that abortion has dropped sharply since the fall of the Soviet Union. But their abortion rate is still by far the highest in the world, in the country where you say more people poll as Christian than ever before. (more than the United States even)

"On a rather disquieting note, Russia saw more pregnancies end in abortion than live birth last year. There were 1,022 abortions per 1,000 births, according to state statistics. The runner-up, Romania, only performed 684 abortions per 1,000 births."

That's from Russia's official news agency.

Russia abolished serfdom before Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, so don't misread me.

No. The Russian serfs were liberated in 1867. The Emancipation Proclamation was published during the Civil War.

I enjoyed your post.

There is a contingent here on FR (and around the US of A I suppose) that fears what is happening in Russia. Maybe with good reason.

When Reagan told Gorby to "tear down this wall" and they eventually did, what did people expect Russia to do? Wither and die? Putin is rebuilding the only way that is possible. Just like all superpowers in history they are being aggressive both economically and territorially. That is how one becomes a superpower. Until we get leaders that understand that we will decline.

I find it ironic that the same people that applaud Reagan's dismantling of the Soviet Union are the same people that don't understand that Putin is rebuilding HIS country. Why shouldn't he? He sees what Obama and the left are doing to the U.S. and doesn't want that to happen in his country. I guess to some patriotism coupled with survival should only be an American belief.

Interesting article. It has been every Russian Tsars dream to control the Bosphorus and the Dardenelles I wonder if Erdogan in Turkey is a bit nervous. Will a RussiN atyets sing the mass in a restored Haigha Sophia?

Yeah because the Russian Empire Was such a great deal and beloved by all the ethnic minorities it enslaved. Why it was called the Prison of Nations LONG before it was Sovietized. No thanks. Non Russians want nothing to do with it.

Amen Brother ......tell it like it is.

His job is to save Mother Russia. Salvation is hard work.

The job is even more difficult when the men are alcoholic and the women cease bearing kids and there is no manufacturing base besides arm to create jobs
