KELLY: Email Uproar: Is CNN’s ‘Chicagoland’ a political contribution to Rahm Emanuel?

The Chicago Tribune has uncovered more than 700 emails between CNN producers and the Office of Mayor Rahm Emanuel – emails that reveal the coordination of the TV series’ story lines, press release approval, and even camera angles relating to the low-rated series, ‘Chicagoland.’

Back in March, I penned a column about the program’s overt attempt to recast Emanuel as a courageous, 21st century mayor. In fact, ‘Chicagoland’ executive producer Robert Redford even compared Emanuel’s job to “being like President of the United States.”

Perhaps Emanuel’s PR team wrote that quote for Redford too.

I also questioned the millions of advertising dollars CNN was spending to slap up billboards around Chicago and the rest of the country to promote the program.  With the timing of Emanuel’s mayoral re-election in Chicago next year, questions and concerns have been more than warranted.

From a media standpoint, the ‘Chicagoland’ series has functioned as an image rebranding effort for Rahm Emanuel – a candidate with low favorability ratings both in Chicago and nationally.

As it turns out, I was more than right.

I caught some of this last weekend. Pretty much a total suck-up job. Fortunately, I doubt Chicago is all that interesting to the wide world outside Cook County.

In fact, ‘Chicagoland’ executive producer Robert Redford...

How disappointing. I was sure we would get total objectivity and a complete lack of bias with Redford in charge.

I haven’t watched anything CNN ever since I saw how CNN Europe portrayed the United States as an insane asylum 20 years ago while traveling. It is an anti-American entity.

I said from the beginning that this was the “Rahm For President Show”.

Zucker got Obama elected at NBC, why would he act any differently at CNN?

He should be charged with campaign contribution violations.

When and if our DoJ is actually run by an honest man, do you suppose when Rahm goes to federal prison, can Redford have an adjoining cell?

There’s two more shows with Chicago as the base, about Chicago PD and Chicago Fire - his name seemed to sneak into the scripts for the few shows I watched too.

This is what I generally thought when it got announced originally. Beyond using the airport....I’d have no desire in entering the county or city....nor going to any game of the Cubs, Bears or Bulls. Watching some nightly walk by cops on patrol and having ambulance drivers discuss how they saved so-and-so from a shooting death....there’s just no interest in this for me.

Beyond the city limits....I doubt if CNN has more than 400,000 people nationwide that view the show on a regular basis, and that really doesn’t pay for real advertising (my humble opinion).

I think Rahm has some idea that he can pull enough numbers to be VP or attorney general. So this is a game to show his strength. Frankly, it’s a comical effort and he’s a marginal executive if you view all the problems that Chicagoland is demonstrating.
