Murray County Deputy Greg Morrison put his arm around the FULL TITLE: Officer has face mauled by police K9 when he tried to take selfie with it

AA Georgia deputy sheriff was rushed to the hospital Monday after a police bit his face, ripping open his chin and lip. Murray County Deputy Greg Morrison put his arm around the Malinois after a job well done in an attempt to take a selfie with his cell phone. But the professional pup was in no mood for camaraderie and proved it with a vicious snap at Morrison's chin. 'It’s an act of aggression to them whenever you do that,' Major Greg Fowler told the Dalton Daily Citizen, referring to Morrison's ill advised decision to wrap an arm around the dog.

And there are those who consider training with treats “lazy”.

ha. This made me laugh. You are correct of course.

I don't think of it as training though, more like reinforcing the desired behaviors until they emerge more often.

Yep we did the same kind of sit teaching..and use hand signals more often than words. Dogs do respond so much more to body language than speech they tell me.

Food works for mine and it’s been a lot easier than the days when food rewards were verboten.

Probably half a dozen Dobes in the 80s were trained with nothing but a hearty GOOD DOG! and a pat on the head.

Of course, there’s the ‘method’ that says start with food until they learn and but then never give food rewards again.

You can’t win.

I have a library of conflicting opinions.

Constantly trying to do the newest, bestest thing can leave you standing there paralyzed with fear that you’re somehow shortchanging your dog.

Thank God they’re always so smart and forgiving of my own ineptitude.

Interesting approach.

Luckily I’ve not had to deal with people aggression in any of my rescue or personal dogs.

I have one dog who grumbles when insecure and to other people, it would look like it’s growling *at* me when actually, it’s growling out of anxiety over a particular stimulus.

That dog gets calm reassurance and then is moved to where I wanted it to be, in the first place.

Only a fool starts a fight with their own dog over such things.

What it *looks* like and what it really is are often wildly different things.

Couldn’t bother reading your tagline, like who cares?

Talk about stupid - I’m not the one that posted photos of Beyonce as a tranny in a dog thread, but I guess that kind of thing turns you on. Whatever...

It's called counter conditioning and it is what I do a lot of...in fact with a new client this week I will begin again on a course of it. Biting JRT - but I do love the terriers.

It is all about changing the emotional state of the dog. Food works. And HVT are the best of all. Hot dogs, cheese, etc.

anyone can do it

The only trick is getting the timing right. You should try it with your grumbler. It is amazing to see it work.

Btw I found it interesting that you used the word “primitive” since that is how I often describe our Formosan mixes ( from Taiwan).

Of course, there’s the ‘method’ that says start with food until they learn and but then never give food rewards again. You can’t win.

What works the best is intermittent treats of varying sizes and yumminess.

I think they call it Intermittent Variable Reinforcement to be technically correct. It is why people go to casinos and gamble.

Mine are stupid-eyed for animal crackers and so are my goats.

Go figure.

They are.

I also have a Portuguese Podengo Medio who was part of a very expensive and difficult cross-country rescue.

I and members of the Ibizan Hound parent club held an auction of donated art for her and her sister’s adoption expenses and plane fare.

She’s even more primitive than the Ibizans.

She also starts all the trouble, here.

She’s a shameless instigator.

Probably why we get along so well.

Mine don’t really get “snacks” between meals so *any* treat is a huge federal case.

Umm, after the last “ mark in the URL, insert width = 500> or whatever.

That’s huge even on my 1900 res screen.

Despite hubby’s attempts otherwise, they’re not spoiled...for food, anyway.
