I haven't seen a report of this anywhere else. Any of you Navy types know anything about this?

all the 27 members of the crew filed a letter of resignation. It seems that all 27 people have written that they are not going to risk their lives. This is indirectly confirmed by the Pentagon statement according to which the action demoralized the crew of the American ship.

LOL! At least Ivan has a sense of humor.

Consider the source. Sounds like propaganda. The USS Donald Cook.

From the American side:

On 12 April 2014, the USS Donald Cook was "buzzed", 12 times by a Russian Su-24 bomber jet. According to U.S. military officials the crew aboard the Donald Cook made several attempts to radio the Russian warplane asking the pilot what his intentions were and sending warnings to remain at a safe distance, but the Russian pilot did not respond.

According to U.S. sources it appears the plane was not armed.

While American military officials consider the incident provocative they say the encounter ended without incident.

Hardly sounds like they jammed it or anything like that, just a "buzz".

“After the incident, the foreign media reported that “Donald Cook” was rushed into a port in Romania. There all the 27 members of the crew filed a letter of resignation.”

I doubt this very much.

They saw this aircraft 50+ miles away and could have dropped it like a bad transmission.
BTW - my nephew's on board the Donald Cook - great kid.

I’d take any Kremlin reports with several pounds of salt right now. (As I would take any White Hut “#” reports.) Popcorn time.

Thank you. I only read the first two paragraphs before I responded. On second read, I picked that up. As with our own media, one is left having to determine which, if any, elements of truth are in the report...

As Spock (the alien, not the lousy author of stupid how-raise-your-kids books) said, “Military secrets are the most fleeting.”

If this is true, and I doubt we’d announce that it was, then the trip there was worth it. Depending for your very survival on something that has already been countered is a need-to-know intel tidbit.

Probably because it's fantasy.

Two things stand out in this report: 1) The Russians have revealed their capability in this regard. 2) The U.S. has revealed that the Russians were effective.

One would hope that the U.S. does have countermeasures and is only letting the Russians think they were effective via this press release, but with MomJeans destroying our military, the probability is that we are sitting ducks.

I don’t buy this for a second. A crew of 27 on an Aegis destroyer? And they ‘resigned’? C’mon. I understand that this is the millenial Navy but I ain’t buying this.

Several points. How would they know the reaction of the DDGs crew? How would they know the screens went blank? Considerable levels of hyperbole in that report. It is possible to jam radars, but an aircraft-borne radar (on a single plane) jamming something like an AEGIS system is not at all easy. That would have to be a powerful transmitter to burn through the AN/SPY1, and if the plane had disabled the AEGIS that could technically be considered an act of war. For decades NATO and the Warsaw Pact would play all sorts of games, games that apparently still continue to this day, but there were certain lines in the sand that were not to be crossed (with the exception of accidental and 'accidental' submarine collisions). A plane doing an aggressive run towards a ship, and disabling its radar and fire control systems, is not a line that is to be crossed.

Anyways, I think the real story is the Fencer flew towards the DDG, was obviously not armed, and like several times in the past was allowed to do its maneuvers. There was no jamming of the AN-SPY1, no plasma stealth or other make-believe technologies, and it was another silly game.

“There all the 27 members of the crew filed a letter of resignation.”

Well, since there are 281 crewmembers, I think we can bin this account right now.

Baghdad Bob has finally obviously come out of retirement to personally take charge of Russia’s Ministry of Communications and Mass Media.

Why do the Russians do this?

They exaggerate their capabilities, which in turn results in the U.S. bolstering its actual military development to counter something that was grossly over rated in the first place, thus putting the Russians even further behind.

Of course with this administration, things are very different!

If this is true, it’s not surprising. Aegis is 80s technology and our government in it’s belief that no one is going to develop anything to defeat it has done nothing to replace it. As far as the Montreaux Convention, war ships are required to file a declaration with Turkey 21 days in advance and normally can stay in the Black Sea for 21 days. Turkey can waive this 21 day limit for a longer stay if they like since they are in control of the strait. The Cook has been there 17 days. Mass resignations is not unheard of. My daughter knows of a recent incident where that happened.

Aegis is obsolescent, but the Soviets are doing us a favor if they show us their countermeasures prior to combat. The Navy does have a high priority program to develop a more modern radar system, if Obama doesn’t scuttle it.
