Washington - Drivers on the nation’s Interstates could soon be paying more to travel. A transportation proposal sent to Congress by the Obama administration on Tuesday would remove a prohibition on tolls for existing Interstate highways, clearing the way for states to raise revenue on roads that drivers currently use at no cost. Congress banned tolls on Interstates in 1956 when it created the national highway system under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Kansas has a ‘turnpike’ too. Those state roads predated the interstate system, but were later incorporated.
Mass pike pre-dates the interstates. The same roadway may have multiple route designations.

There is a pilot programs where three states can apply for tolling a stretch of interstate highway to repair and improve it. So far, none of the three states that have received approval have done anything.
Aren’t the gas and diesel fuel taxes supposed to provide the funding for maintaining the highways?
Have the Feds spent those funds elsewhere, instead, such as paying the Obamacare “navigators” to scam people into signing up for a failed program?
I hope BOTH houses of Congress treat this proposal just like they have every one of Obama’s budget proposals; thumbs down!
Part of I-87 and I-90 are tolled because they are on the New York Thruway. Various toll roads were grandfathered into the interstate system. Thus, you have tolls on I-90 in Massachusetts (MassTurnpike), parts of I-70 and I-76 in Pennsylvania (PATurnpike) and part of I-80 in Ohio (Ohio Turnpike).
No different than what Governor Perry wanted to do to Texas.

Only part of it - the part not built by the feds.
One other comments. If you’re waiting for the gas tax to go away, you might get that. You’ll trade a 20 cent per gallon gas tax for a 20 cent PER MILE road charge. So don’t wish too hard for that.

The TTC (Trans-Texas Corridor) that was proposed was not and Interstate highway. It would have been INTRAstate.
So... No, Perry did not propose tolls on Interstates in Texas, AFAIK.
Bull! Where's all that tax money we pay that is supposed to go to roadway development and maintenance! No cost my lily white backside!
