Russia is not going to allow a hostile regime on its borders. No settlement of the Ukraine situation will occur that does not respect Russian interests.
Its that simple and unlike in the 19th Century - the West lacks the will and the means to “contain” Russia. It does not have to be a zero sum game but right now no one is looking for a way out of the crisis.

Russia didn’t start this mess. Those who overthrew their legally elected government did. Maybe with our help. Putin is just picking some of the low hanging fruit there. Ukraine ain’t worth starting WW-III for.
