Driver caught using cell phone jamming device

A Florida man is facing a $48,000 fine for using a "jammer" in his SUV to keep people around him off of the phone while he was driving.

The Federal Communications Commission says that Jason R. Humphreys used a phone jammer in his vehicle during his daily commute on I-4 between Seffner and Tampa for about two years before he was caught.

Metro PCS alerted the Feds of an issue in April of 2013. The company noticed that its cell phone tower sites had been experiencing interference during the morning and evening commutes.

Agents from the FCC used direction finding techniques to find that strong wideband emissions were coming out of a blue Toyota Highlander SUV driven by Humphreys.

The FCC says that Hunphreys admitted to using the jammer to keep people from talking on their phones while driving.

"Anybody know how much these cost? Sounds like fun if used sparingly."

I've read that they're about $170.00.

You can buy them for under $100 on internet.

Might be nice to bring to a theatre, but be more careful than this guy.

Your speakers must have an active component. I occasionally have the same problem with a set of PC speakers, even when both pc and speakers are turned off.

Worth there wait in gold...especially if your on a Chicago CTA bus packed with Amish kids early in the morning. The fun part is turning it off then on again. Not that I’d know anything about it.

Or if you’re handy: http://www.ladyada.net/make/wavebubble/

Just like anything else, legal or otherwise, in the hands of a moron is more dangeous and stupid than when used intelligently.

I talk on my cell phone in the car a lot—but only when my husband is driving. Indiscriminate jamming is not okay.

I’ve been talking on the phone while in my vehicle since the start of these things. Not once has it almost crashed me, not once have I almost ran someone over. These hands free things now are far more distracting. I’ll continue to be safe my own way.

This guy is probably a Liberal Democrat.

Always ready to make sure everyone else does what he thinks is right by whatever means is necessary.

None that you noticed.

The guy that was on the bike is still cleaning his shorts out!

Some people have enough brain cells to talk and drive at the same time.

It's illegal for any County or local government to pass any law restricting cell phone use in Fl.

haha, maybe.

I will say what’d dangerous 100% though.

When I was posted in Winnipeg in the army, the base was on a busy corner. We soldiers would be doing ruck marches or platoon runs etc, and the girls in the morning commute would be driving by looking at us so hard (or maybe just me heh), and they’d rear end the person in front of them. I saw that happen at least once every two weeks lol.

I don't see why they should be illegal.

1 If the fine for this is possibly $48000; the fine for the idiot that causes an accident on the road because he was on a cell phone should be 2 X $48000.

2. If it blocks an emergency call by a person driving the freeway - tough luck! What the H-E 2x hockey sticks is he driving, on the cell, and calling 911 for???

My electrician drives by the house occasionally and says hello via his CB on hyper power. He can speak through my stereo speakers when the thing isn’t even on!

Does his head spin all the way around too?

"....not once have I almost ran someone over."

Count your blessings. I ride a motorcycle every sunny day to work. I have seen too many close calls and accidents happen by drivers on there cell phones - some even texting!
