Spread of Polio is 'World health emergency' as disease spreads through Asia, Africa and Middle East

"The spread of polio around the world has become so serious it is now an international public health emergency, the World Health Organization warned today.

The agency said the problem could grow in the next few months and unravel the nearly three-decade effort to eradicate the crippling disease.

It described current polio outbreaks in Asia, Africa and the Middle East as an 'extraordinary event' that required a coordinated international response. It was the first-ever international alert on polio.

'Until it is eradicated, polio will continue to spread internationally, find and paralyze susceptible kids,' Dr Bruce Aylward, who leads WHO's polio efforts."

In early 1950’s I came down with spinal meningitis. The first thing I was tested for was polo. Once that came back they started testing me for other issues.

I was 6. My divorced mother was terrified at the possibility of her young son spending the rest of his life in an iron lung or as a cripple, like FDR.

When the polo vaccine came out a few years later I was among the first in my school to receive it. Mom said that the two days sweating out the medical test results four years earlier was enough terror for her.

IMHO there is no non-political reason for everyone not to receive the polo vaccine,

You have a good point there; if relations were to somehow become better and we could give them what they need to resist this, I am certain that we could save millions of lives (and develop some kind of good relations.

I agree, as long as you get fully informed and make use your own best judgement.

Yeah of course; I’ll consult a doctor and ask his/her opinion about it. I’m just not interested in an iron lung experience.

Either way, better safe than sorry I say.

Somehow the vision comes to mind of 1 million Muslims being rolled into Mecca in iron lungs for their Haj.

And that’s okay with me. I just want to make sure folks don’t go off half cocked based on something I might say. When it comes to medicine, folks need to look at every side of the issue.

That’s good. Good luck to you.

You know, I’m not a person to give medical advice, and having worked in a pharmacy for many years, I’m sensitive to suggesting courses of action folks have to take to be safe.

I’m willing to say what I might do, but I also want to make sure folks get the straight scoop.

Wasn’t trying to give you a hard time.

That is a more logical reason than what you hear from American parents who refuse to have their kids vaccinated. We’ve got a case of chicken pox in our school. The school nurse tells me that 30% of the kids in the class are not vaccinated. And we can’t notify any of the parents that their kids may have been exposed. WTF?!?

Of course you weren’t! I knew that.

Three regions though is something to pay attention to.

Anything to “Unite” the Masses in whatever endeavor they’ll be attempting in the not so distant future.... “Fear” is always a favorite.....unfortunately too many always die to make it believable.

They have to use something...war doesn’t work anymore. People don’t have the stomach for it and the results to day aren’t to win anyway.

Not surprising they’re not vaccinated, our country no longer “protects” children from ‘anything’ that is harmful to their impressionable minds, bodies or hearts.

Africa
Asia
Middle East

It’s only a matter of time before it hits the Americas and comes to the US via immigration.

Then we all suffer because of the complete incompetence of the US government to handle these things and the pathetic inability of a lot of citizens to handle any emergency with any self sufficiency.

I, too am old enough to remember the days before the Salk vaccine.

I was born in Arkansas in 1948, when Polio was a scourge on humanity. It was a summertime disease, it proliferated in the heat. Surrounded by cousins on all sides, we visited rarely. The disease reached an uncle's house and killed one daughter and affected others less severely.

When the Salk vaccine arrived on scene, we were among the first to receive it. At first it was a series of three shots. There was no choice. If you have ever seen the death and destruction caused by this disease, you would kick down doors to get your children vaccinated.

Later, we were re-vaccinated with the oral vaccine. Don't know if it was necessary, but MY parents were taking no chances. Smart people.

Truth be told, I see the polio epidemic infesting savage Muslim regions as a blessing in disguise.

Until these third world kids get on a plane and start reinfecting the rest of the world, where polio no longer exists.

The WHO will be delighted to take credit for eradicating polio, as will Bill Gates. And wonderful organizations like Rotary international are at the forefront of the effort, and have been for decades since polio was endemic in most of the world.

India just eradicated polio last year.

Islam is the problem (keeping the remaining nations in poverty and oppression, and resisting international eradication efforts.)

There is lots of ignorance on display in this thread.
