Mother and daughter reunited after 77 years; Tualatin woman writes about 'The Waiting'

The cover photo of "The Waiting" says almost everything. Strong hands, worn and wrinkled by more than a century but still full of life, hold a faded photograph of a young mother and a newborn baby. The mother, still a girl, has eyes only for the bundled child. It's love, captured in a moment and bound together forever.

Minka Disbrow carried that photo all her life. It's her and her daughter, a girl she gave up for adoption as a teenager and never thought she'd see again. Betty Jane, she named the baby that was conceived after a rape and born in the Lutheran House of Mercy in Sioux Falls, S.D. Betty Jane was adopted by a good family, a minister and his wife, who named her Ruth and raised her with love.

It isn't mentioned here but two of the grandchildren (products of the rape) included a West Point grad and a NASA astronaut.

My wife was adopted as an infant shortly after she was born in 1961 by farm couple (my in - laws).

About 10 years ago, my wife’s half brother reached out to her and she traveled to Portland to meet her half brothers and her birth mother and birth grandmother. According to her, it was a good meeting and she still maintains contact with one of her half sibs. She is glad that she met them but her allegiance is completely to her adopted parents.

My lovely wife has only reinforced my stance on abortion. I shudder to think that she would not be in my life today. And how many more instances/cases like this are there out in the world today????
