Conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage says if Pope Francis wants income redistribution he should start with his own Church.
On his Friday show, Savage said he would bid $1 million for Michelangelo's famous painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.
"The reason I'm offering that money to the pope and the Vatican is so they can redistribute the wealth that begins in the Vatican itself," Savage said.
Savage said he was making a point that there is vast wealth within the Catholic Church, including priceless works of art and major shares in global companies. Gold ingots could be sold for redistribution purposes, Savage said.
Francis on Friday told a group of U.N. delegates, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, that they should urge world governments to back "the legitimate redistribution of economic benefits by the state, as well as indispensable cooperation between the private sector and civil society."
Savage's response: "It's Karl Marx in a papal outfit."
He noted that Francis is from Argentina, home to liberation theology along with much of Latin America, in the 1960s and '70s. And although Francis himself never practiced liberation theology, "he was certainly shaped by it," Savage said.

My personal theory is that at this point in time the idiots that vote Democrat, support abortion, and want women priests need a Pope that is hard left to wake them the Hell up. At least that is my hope for this man being the Pope.
He is mistaken in his interpretation of what the Pope is saying.
Subsidiarity: going to the smallest entity possible for assistance, for example, your neighbor, neighborhood, local church, local agencies such as St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Well this is a fun one. But at least while they are busy bashing us, someone else is being left alone.
Sounds like a fine idea. Sell the papal bling for starters... that alone should be worth million$.

I'm not Catholic either but always wondered why such beautifully adorned and gilded houses of worship, standing next to people living in mud huts, no clean water and very little substance.
With the current head of the Catholic church claiming that other should be required to do more for the poor, living in an ivory (golden) tower, smacks as the ultimate hypocrisy!

The Catholic Church supports literally tens of thousands of hospitals, universities, elementary schools, and charitable homes throughout the world. In India alone, there are 13000 Catholic elementary and high schools, 400 colleges and 500 technical schools.
The fact is that the Catholic Church is by far the largest charitable organization on earth.
This is wrong on many levels.
First, the museums hold treasure for all people who wish to see them. While they belong to the Vatican they really belong to me and you, just like any other museum piece. I’m not sure why the pieces (many of them priceless) being redistributed all over would be a good idea.
And when that money was gone, then what?
And what would Italy say? How much tourism money goes towards keeping Italy afloat?
I would assume that much of the income goes towards operating the Vatican itself. Unlike us, it doesn’t print its own money.
The Vatican donates a lot of money. Catholics donate a lot of money. And yes, non-Catholic Christians do too.
Our Catholic idea is that we give glory to God in beauty (ties back in a fashion to the interaction between Jesus and Judas about the perfume that could have been sold).
I don’t think you’re a bigot or an idiot but do think this proposition has *serious* limitations.
I’ve seen interpretations where the word ‘benefits’ has been used rather than redistribution of money. Is that such a bad thing? Perhaps not. I do share the concern that the UN and other orgs are treated as overly legitimate but...
As a devout Catholic it does get tiring that I have to defend / explain the Pope’s words constantly. I miss B16.
Savage wasn't being absurd, he was just being stupid.
How does the Roman Catholic Church qualify as "the richest religion in the world"? Cash flow? There isn't a lot of that - the Vatican runs a deficit more often than a surplus. Artwork? They do have a boatload of that, but how do you liquidate it? How do you sell the Sistine Ceiling or the Bernini Altar or the Raphael Room frescoes? Property? Short of turning St. Peter's into condos then how do you generate money from that? Yes, the Vatican is the guardian of some of the most valuable art treasures in the world. But for the purposes of liquidating into cash they're pretty worthless.
Perhaps it would be better to rent it out for Corp functions? /sarc

There have been at least two other threads on this subject since Francis opened his mouth. Even more troubling than how it’s been presented (we know that the media will spin it to fit their own agenda) is how Freepers and other Conservatives are p*ssing themselves indignant based on how the media are telling them to interpret it.
I’m not Roman Catholic, but I did go to a Jesuit high school. I understand subsidiarity pretty well, but I also know that there’s a HUGE difference between “wealth” and “economic benefit” ... And that’s even before understanding that the Pope seriously qualified his statement with the word “legitimate”. AND was speaking more to the actions of third works plutocracies than the US and Western capitalist systems.
In fact, the closest US/Western analogy to what the Pope was targeting in his statement is “crony capitalism”, which any good conservative will abhor for it’s restrictions on the redistribution of economic benefit.
Certainly the Vatican archives have something they can kick in.
And how about giving the Temple stuff depicted on the Arch Of Titus back to the Jews.
Hey Savage those works of art were given to God for all ages. He has title to them. Talk to Him.
