RICHMOND There was a time when House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) sympathized with the tea partys frustration with Washington.
Now, hes engaged in open warfare with the GOPs insurgent wing.
The audience boos as House Majority Leader Eric Cantor addresses Republican activists.
This week, Cantors opponent in the June 10 primary a tea party activist named David Brat is gaining national attention as a potential threat to Cantors hold on his solidly Republican, suburban Richmond district. Brat has won support from some big-name conservatives and has tapped into discontent across Virginias 7th Congressional District. On Wednesday, Brat planned to travel to Washington to meet with leading conservative agitators, a sign that his effort is starting to be taken seriously at the national level.
The intraparty drama is the latest reflection of the deepening chasm in the Republican Party across Virginia and the nation. And it is all the more remarkable because it is happening to a man widely seen as the likely next speaker of the House.
Most Republicans continue to believe Cantor is safe; he won a primary challenge two years ago with nearly 80 percent of the vote. But the prospect of a competitive and bruising challenge to the second-ranking Republican in Congress is embarrassing to Cantor and is rattling GOP leaders at a time when the party is trying to unify its divided ranks.

Robert Costa was superb when he was National Review's DC correspondent. He moves to the WaPo..and now look what he's writing..
The party is NOT trying to unify, the party is trying to bludgeon the tea party into submission.
Yup.
“The party is NOT trying to unify, the party is trying to bludgeon the tea party into submission.”
And that’s simply not going to happen. I like to think the tea party is still interested in compromise so long as the GOPe moves in our direction, but they seem hell bent on enacting just about everything we vehemently oppose. If I’m anything like other conservatives, I have no desire to surrender the social issues, and I don’t believe “small government” means constantly expanding government.
Unless the GOPe is willing to actually give us some of what we want and stop working against us, I can’t see us working much with them. Our party leaders especially need to show some respect for the voters who put them into office as well as some respect for conservative politicians, like Cruz and Lee, who are doing what we want. How can there be peace when the GOPe undermines the conservatives we actually manage to send to D.C.? The GOPe consistently proves it’s more aligned with the Democrats than the tea party!
It used to be that we were threatened that if we didn't give in and vote for moderate Rebulicans, the Democrats would win all the elections and foist nationalized health care on us or expand the debt to astronomical levels or pass amnesty or let the muslims take over many of our institutions.
Guess what...We consistently nominated moderate Republicans and all of those things happened (or are going to happen) anyway.
There is no downside to abandoning the GOPe any longer. It is perfectly clear that nothing will change as long as the establishment stays in power.
“with the GOPs insurgent wing.” Insurgent... not a loaded word there at all....

I never liked Costa. Always saw him as a RINO. Glad he’s gone from National Review. There’s a few others that need to go, too!
Gotta disagree..Costa was superb when he was at NR...had great sources inside the GOP..broke lots of stories..
