I work for McDonalds and I make $21 an hour.
No, that isnt a typo. Its really my salary.
You see, I work for McDonalds in Denmark, where an agreement between our union and the company guarantees that workers older than 18 are paid at least $21 an hour. Employees younger than 18 make at least $15 meaning teenagers working at McDonalds in Denmark make more than two times what many adults in America earn working at the Golden Arches.
To anyone who says that fast-food jobs cant be good jobs, I would answer that mine isnt bad. In fact, parts of it are just fine. Under our unions agreement with McDonalds, for example, I receive paid sick leave that workers are still fighting for in many parts of the world. We also get overtime pay, guaranteed hours and at least two days off a week, unlike workers in most countries. At least 10 percent of the staff in any given restaurant must work at least 30 hours a week.
But in New York last week, I met fast-food workers from around the world who arent as lucky as I am. We marched through Midtown Manhattan demanding a fair wage and respect at the workplace.
Many of the U.S. workers I met make less than $9 an hour. And unlike in Denmark, where most fast-food workers are young people looking to make extra money while in school, the vast majority of U.S. fast-food workers are adults trying to support their families. Roughly 70 percent are in their 20s or older, according to a recent study, and more than a quarter are raising kids.

According to this site
http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Denmark&displayCurrency=USD
The cost of a combo meal in Copenhagen is $12.68
The cost of a combo meal in Boston (about same pop) is $7.00
Things are 1.8 times as expensive there.
$21 in Copenhagen buys what $11 will buy in Boston.
bump
Agreed.
People who think McDonald’s has good hamburgers, has probably never had a home made burger, made with real beef.
Personally, I prefer to buy meat at the grocery store, and make my own hamburgers.
“Overpriced”
You have fuzzy math.
Avg price of Big Mac in U.S. = $4.68
Ave price of Big Mac in Denmark = $5.37
What do they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in Denmark?
***
An IRA.
Dinner for 4?
Isn’t Denmark’s economy largely subsidized through North Sea oil revenues?
My understanding is that they have a well developed welfare state, but balance their budget because of vast state controlled/owned oil exports compared to a small population.
Am I mistaken?
A Big Mac where I live is $3.49, maybe a Big Mac meal is $4.68.
A BigMac in Denmark is about USD$5.37
I’ve taken three vacations to Denmark, and know the relative cost of life. It’s not cheap. Gas sells for roughly $9 a gallon. A bottle of Jacky D’s is $32 (the same bottle in the US is $16). No one eats out very much (burgers, pizza, etc) because it’s all fairly expensive. There are roughly eighty McDonalds in Denmark....probably a third of them within an hour’s drive of Copenhagen.
On the positive side? The cleanest beaches in the world. It’s safe enough for kids to roam twenty-four hours a day just about everywhere. And Danish small towns are the way that the US used to be in the 1970s.
Yes, Denmark has considerable sources of oil and natural gas in the North Sea and ranks as number 32 in the world among net exporters of crude oil.
Not as much as Norway, but still quite self-sufficient.
Those stats are the average price, not the price where you live.
Best kind.
McD here in Pittsburgh is heavily promoting a “Dinner Box”.
Two Big Macs, two regular cheeseburgers, four small fries, and a ten piece McNuggets for ten bucks.
Sharp pricing, but frankly more fast food than we could or would eat at this stage.
Because after all fast food workers are the most essential workers in society.
LOL. How much is a burger there?
remember The Accidental Tourist with William Hurt? he would eat at Burger Kings :)
But do they sell their Double Cheeseburgers for $1.45? Or a Sausage McMuffin for $1?
