Mother Outraged After 9-Year-Old Daughter Sent Home From School With Note Calling Her Overweight

May 23, 2014 11:30 AM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - One Staten Island mother found a message sent from her daughter’s school hard to swallow.

Gwendolyn Williams, 9, brought home a “fitness-gram” from PS 29 this week.

Her mother Laura Williams told 1010 WINS Gwen was upset because the message said that, according to her body mass index, she was overweight.

Gwendolyn is 4’1″ and weighs just 66 pounds.

“She’s not overweight,” Laura Williams told 1010 WINS. “She’s healthy. She’s active. She plays softball, she plays outside with her friends, so it was ludicrous to read that.”

“What really concerned me is that then she started asking questions about, you know, she touched her thigh, and she said ‘Is this what they mean?’ And I said ‘Gwen, no, everybody’s thigh jiggles like that,’” Williams said. “It just really disturbed me on a deep level.”

The Department of Education is defending the “fitness-grams” as a way to help students develop personal goals for lifelong health. The messages are carried home to parents by the students. Apparently, Gwendolyn took a peek at the contents of her message.

Thanks for posting the link with her picture! She’s not even close to overweight. Not even close. Madness is running rampant these days.

4’, 1” and 66 lbs.? That doesn’t seem over wight. The lady had better consult the family doctor about that and the have the doctor write a letter to the school that they are full of sh-t.

I was so skinny, Bangladeshi refugees used to slip me food.

Q. What do you call a Bangladeshi refugee walking his dog?
A. A vegetarian

“I know that I’m not overweight, so why should I believe the New York Department of Education?” she said.

I think her mind and body is right.

Something similar happened to a co-worker of mine. During our annual health screening, they told her she was obese (she’s anything but). Turns out the CNA taking her information mistakenely entered 54 in. tall instead of 5ft. 4in.!

My senior year of high school I was 5'-10", weighed 185# and ate everything in site.

I had about 8% body fat.

I had a 30" waist and 44" chest.

I ran 5-10 miles a day, depending on the day.
And seriously lifted weights for 1 hour a day.

We had something called the Iron Man Club at school. Numerous lifts and running events. Some for raw strength, some for endurance, some for time.

For my weight class, I was the only person, my year, to place in all categories.

I had a friend in HS, 5 years later who said my name was still on the board, in a number of categories.

During my senior year, I had an injury that required me to go to the ER. I had a little oriental doctor, maybe 5'-6", who told me 185# was too heavy for my height and told me I should lose 15-20#.

I took of my shirt, which I wore oversized and told the doctor my body fat %, then asked him where he'd like me to lose the weight from.

Up until I hit 40, I could never buy a complete suit, always individual pieces, except if the place would cut out the seams of the pants and virtually remake the pants.

(I don't have that problem anymore.)

Oh great, young girls already have a myriad of reasons why they "feel" fat and become anorexic/bulimic.

Now we have the state telling her that.

By the pictures, this girl is NOWHERE near overweight. At 9 years old, she looks about perfect.

She is on the low end of the normal BMI (which is a crap measurement) but nowhere near a high BMI.

The girl’s mom could stand to lose about 30#, but the girl looks to be a very healthy weight for her age.

These parents need to learn to really fight back. Go to the school and take pics of all the administrators and teachers then home publish a booklet to pass out......

Miss Jones, Principal - Weighing in at well over 200 looks like she needs to lose 50 lbs or so before she starts preaching to our kids.

Mr. Jones, Math - Vegan and sickly looking. Please eat a fat, juicy hamburger!

etc., etc., etc........on every single one of them. I would be vicious. ;)

So tax payers and citizens shouldn’t have a voice in their government?

How about we start measuring the BMI on all EBT/SNAP users? Then we can adjust the amount of dollars put on them based on the amount of calories they need to lose weight. When they hit a "normal" BMI, the amounts can be adjusted to maintain "proper" body fat.

Why waste all our taxpayer funded food money on fat people especially when they are getting it for "free"? How about a little discipline here!

Great way to turn a nice, pretty, normal little girl into a bulemic neurotic or worse! What in the world are these people thinking?

I view the ones with kids in the system the same way I would people on food stamps. Their neighbors are carrying most of their water yet they still think they have reason to bitch instead of sacking up and getting the kids they pretend to care about out of a system that abuses those kids. The government schools stopped being about your kids a long, long time ago. Everyone paying attention knows this.

Once again, parents have to get involved in what is happening to their children in these socialist schools.

The kids are in school to be educated. Their body mass, their health issues are the business OF the parents only. You’d better get out there, parents, and short of making sure that kids are vaccinated as needed, the health of your child is YOUR BUSINESS. School boards, keep your hands off of my child...my child’s heath is between my doctor and me...butt out!
