At the JFK airport terminal, while traveling in Class A Uniform, I walked up to very young soldier, also in uniform. He was a slick sleeve, and I assumed on his way to his AIT station. I was only going to be friendly and ask. The darn kid jumped up, and snapped to attention.

After I assured him that I wouldn't be yelling or dropping him for pushups, he explained that he was fresh out of basic and on his way home for a couple weeks.

Poor kid, I hadn't thought about how he'd react, or the trauma I could cause. I was probably the first senior NCO who'd treated him as a fellow soldier.

Thanks US Navy Vet for confirming what I thought. That’s what
I have been doing. THANK YOU for your service to our country.

Our son served in Iraq inside an Abrams tank and we are mighty
proud of him.

Occasionally I am told that and reply “Thanks, on behalf of those who didn’t come back.”

Most of the times it is sincere, but occasionally it is said in a “Have a Nice Day” manner. Those I blow off.

Hey, not everyone can be a Marine.

As long as they keep their mouth shut about draft dodgers, I do not GAS.

No, fewer young people are exposed to the concept of service to and love of country than back when I was young. I generally have no way of knowing why they failed to serve, so I don’t judge them. I do appreciate the thanks.

It would be nice to know what side they’ll take in the soon-to-come 1776 replay, though. We’ll have to train some and eliminate others.

At the end of basic at Ft.Polk, a friend and I pulled off our usual avoidance of joining our fellow trainee mob, and were hanging out with some of the drill sergeants while everyone else was doing the graduation ceremony stuff in the heat.

When it was over one of the trainees passed by and when running into the drill sergeants went into his trainee panic, one of the sergeants had to tell him to relax, that basic is over now, you are one of us, a part of the Army, you aren’t a trainee anymore.

I can’t help but notice that all this “Thank you for your service” replaced men actually enlisting themselves.

Today we have a tiny military, but we have to take females to fill the ranks.

Politicians who avoid military service while being “conservative” really annoy me, Newt Gingrich was never military material with his pudgy nerdiness and flat feet and early family, but Rick Santorum, Pat Buchanan, Mitt Romney, they annoy me.

I think Yorlik nailed it:

No....the military isn’t cut out for everybody. and a Lot of people couldn’t join due to health reasons.

What Irks me is Fake Vets who plaster themselves with ribbons and medals and try to bash the military. Those jerks should be given life in front of a firing squad.

No but irks me when my wife doesn’t thank me for my service which is why I’m nicknamed Irkel.

They wouldn’t let me in. Something about a heart murmur and Reagan being President (i.e. they had plenty of officer candidates)

I say “Thank you for your service to every Veteran I meet.”

What irks me is hearing / seeing “Happy Memorial Day.”

I got an email from the NRA that said “Happy Memorial Day.”

They should know better.

Oh, and Thank you for your service.

I know. This guy’s a troll.

Thanks for your service and I’ll still pick up the tab when I see a serviceman in a bar or restaurant.

I always thank vets for their service even tough I am a vet too. I’m sure many of them did way more than I did.
