What continues to gnaw at the family is whether officers could have handled this differently. Was the officer who fired properly trained for someone who is suicidal? Did he have a Taser that could have been used instead? What was the role of the other officers on the scene? The family can't understand how this could have happened.
"They're supposed to come to help and stop the suicide and they came and killed him," said Natalie Moriarty, Christian's aunt.

About the only thing the cops care about is making sure that they go home at night.

And so it goes. Another day another civilian gunned down by those who are supposed to “serve and protect”.

Well, he IS over being suicidal. And, the cop went home unharmed. I’m not seeing the problem. He was a CIVILIAN! Thus, of no importance. He will vote Democrat, tho.

The cops aren’t trained to say, “Aww, you’re suicidal?...you get one free shot.”

If I were a bit more cynical I’d point out that they did stop the suicide. Just not quite in the way they wanted.
Bad cop, no donut.

I don’t blame the cops. Unless the spaces in that house were like Downton Abbey, there was no time for any fancy moves. It was shoot or be stabbed.

Wow. This kid needs help, and instead he gets four rounds. This seems very amateurish by the police.
RIP Christian.

Moral of the story: if your loved one is suicidal, don’t call the police.
It’s well documented that your loved one will almost certainly be shot in such cases.

Only call the police on a family member if you wouldn't mind seeing them dead.

No way I would bet my life on the reliability of a Taser. A friend of mine tried that with a mentally ill man and got hit over the head with a hammer. Skull fracture and a hundred staples and stitches. The backup officers shot the man as he went to swing again.
The locals in my area have had way better luck with less than lethal shotgun rounds. Way more separation and safety for all involved. The limiting factor is that you need enough officer on the scene to set up that kind of employment.

Remember this? Back when the police cared about human life? Sniper shoots gun out of suicidal man?
Maybe all the shoot to kill incidents are due to limited budgets and not wanting to pay overtime for talking the poor bastard down. Internal reviews justify the shoot and the cop gets a paid vacation.
Just sayin.

I can’t understand why, if he was suicidal, he was at a friend’s house, instead of home or with a counsellor, or institutionalized until he could be helped past his depression/suicidal tendencies. Wasn’t it somewhat irresponsible of his parents to let him go off to a friend’s house instead of getting professional help?
