George W. Bush undergoes knee replacement surgery

Former President George W. Bush spent his Memorial Day weekend laid up in Chicago undergoing knee replacement surgery, according to reports.

Bush, 67, underwent the outpatient procedure at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center on Saturday, NBC Chicago reported.

Doctors allowed Bush to stay at a nearby hotel after the operation, before he flew home to Dallas Monday afternoon.

Bush was accompanied during the medical trip by wife Laura and a Secret Service detail, NBC Chicago reported.

The former President has kept a relatively low profile in recent months, even declining to attend the Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum dedication ceremony in New York earlier this month because it may have been “too emotional,” sources told the Daily News.

Texas has several nationally ranked orthopedics hospitals specializing in joint replacement and spinal surgery.

Outpatient knee replacement? Wow.

I get the sense that they “let him” stay in a hotel (luxury presidential suite for privacy and security presumably) for what would normally be an in-patient procedure. His nurses probably just monitored him in his hotel bed instead of his hospital bed, with all the equipment brought to him.

Did you ever consider maybe in Chicago it wouldn’t be as disruptive to as many other patients because of the extra security that’s necessary.

No disrespect knarf, but knee replacement surgery is quite an ordeal. There are precision good ones and lousy standard replacements. Both are very difficult for the surgeon and patient. First 2 weeks are hell on the patient. Then 6 months rehab to get where you want. GW will do the work no doubt but it’s very cumbersome.

Ok, now I don't understand you. Do you think President Bush is in Chicago for a meeting with Obama’s thugs?

By the way, I wouldn't go to Chicago for any reason — even if its hospitals and doctors are the only ones who could treat me.

He let congress control him and he did not see a spending bill he did not like. Spend, spend, spend. You would have thought the dems were in control and not the R’s.

That family does not know the meaning of ‘living within your means’.

In my opinion he disappointed me in two primary areas. One was he went nation building in Iraq by hanging around, something he campaigned against in 2000. He should have put two bullets in the head of Hussein, covered him up in that hole he was in and brought all our folks and equipment home.
Two, he spend money just like a dem.

"they don't replace knees anywhere in Texas ?"

-------------------------->

The leading surgeon for this type of surgery is Dr. Stefan Kreutzer.

People from all over the world come to Houston for Dr. Kreutzer. He is a leader worldwide for knee and hip surgery.

I know this because I am one of his patients. He replaced both of my bum hips.

He used a special machine for patient to lie on that helps him to access the hip from the front of the hip instead of the side or the back. Muscles are pulled aside rather than cut. The bed also helps surgeon to insure the legs will be even after the surgery is over.

Most of Dr. Kreuzer's patients go home in two days and have rehab at a rehab facility or with home rehab specialists.

I'm a little startled he didn't go to Kreuzer. Kreuzer lectures worldwide on this special surgery table. He helped develop it. Doctors worldwide also come to watch his surgeries and to look over the special surgical bed.

Some old school doctors are not interested in the new style of hip and knee surgeries.

Others are interested, but it is very expensive.

It, the bed, and Dr. Kreutzer helped me get back on my feet very quickly and I'm profoundly grateful for Dr. Kreutzer's skills.

A knee replacement done as an outpatient procedure is beyond amazing.

I’m sure they do but the RUSH procedure is unique and is out-patient surgery, with half the recovery time.

I wish I could go there for my up coming knee replacement.

Mine was done ‘the old-fashioned way.’ In at 7 am day 1 and out at 6 am day 2. No hospital stay to be paid form but there was more than a smidgen of home care afterwards.

Believe it or not, this really is outpatient surgery with a two to four week recovery time.

I will be having a partial knee replacement in 4 weeks. The inner side of my knee has deteriorated from osteoarthritis but the outer side is still okay. Smaller incision and less invasive than total knee replacement. A much shorter recovery time. Was told about 2 weeks of rehab and will be able to walk without aids. One night stay in hospital. Full recovery for PKR around 3 months compared to around 6 months for TKR. Still not looking to the pain even though it won’t be as bad as a TKR.

What I find most surprising is not that this was done in Chicago, but there was NO mention of this in the media until he had returned to Texas . . .

(and I live in the Shitcago area)

Minimally Invasive Total Knee Replacement

Program Description

Orthopedic surgeons at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, are among the first in the United States to perform a minimally invasive surgical technique for total knee replacement that can dramatically reduce pain and recovery time, with better early range of motion and improved knee function. The orthopedic surgery team at Rush used the experience and expertise gained from performing minimally invasive surgical techniques developed for hip replacement surgery to perfect this innovative technique.

This new method of total knee replacement can be performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing some patients to go home the very day of the surgery. The new procedure is performed through one small three- to four-inch incision (instead of the larger eight- to 12-inch incision of the standard surgical technique). This approach has the potential for dramatically reducing pain by sparing muscles and tendons that historically have been cut during standard total knee replacement surgery. Patients generally have a two- to four-week recovery time with the minimally invasive surgery, compared to the two to three months of recovery time with traditional knee surgery.

Best of luck on your surgery, and if they prescribe anticoagulants post-op, for G-d’s sake stay compliant.
