Tea party: Don't toss out Eric Cantor
WND ^ | 5/29/14 | William Murray

Posted on 05/29/2014 6:55:17 PM PDT by jimbo123

Move to defeat House majority leader: I agree with much of what the tea party stands for and many of the efforts of leaders within it to elect conservatives. The tea party, however, is not one group; it is thousands of major and minor groups across the nation, and it is not possible to agree with all of them or for all of those groups to agree with each other.

Some Virginia tea-party groups are leading the charge to oust House Majority Leader Eric Cantor from his Seventh District seat. These groups have chosen David Brat, a college professor who appears to lean more toward Ayn Rand than either traditional or social conservatism. Brat was once an appointee of former Democrat Gov. Tim Kaine, although that does not automatically make him a liberal. Social conservatives will find a rather lofty but vague pro-life statement listed last among issues at his Internet site. Many of his other positions seem to be libertarian in nature, which makes sense as many tea-party groups are moving in that direction.

The biggest tea-party accusation against Cantor is that he is “too establishment.” The fact that he can move jobs and investments to his Seventh District seems to be a liability to him with tea-party members. It is, in essence, the tea party saying: “The fact that Eric Cantor is the second most powerful man on Capitol Hill and can bring jobs and benefits to our district is proof he is too establishment and we need to get rid of him.”

I appreciate a lot of what the tea party does, but in some of the groups there is a real lack of understanding of the Constitution that is waved around at meetings, when it comes to the duties of congressmen.

Brat was on Laura Ingram radio show this morning. He is a real leader on the immigration attack at our Southern Border. Obama planes now fly illegal aliens by the thousand from Texas into Tucson, Az and lets them take a Bus at our expense any where they want to go!!! There are illegal aliens near you!! Texas is now over run and out of control. This is a treasonous disregard of our sovereignty. The press ignores the story for deciduous reasons. It is time for action. Brat strikes down the leading proponent of amnesty if he wins.Obama release 36,000 convicted rapists murderers, sex offender, thieves etc out of prisons!! and Boehner/Cantor do NOTHING???

Wonderful. Looks like some Tea Party groups have found yet another embarrassment to run as the "true conservative"

And let me guess, if he doesn't win the primary, they'll root for the Democrat to defeat Cantor in November so it "teaches the GOP a lesson"

good points. The author is trying to sound like he knows what he is talking about.

BTW- Couldn’t the Democrats change their mind and add a candidate later on? We all know how easy it is to get a leftist judge to order it.

>> The biggest tea-party accusation against Cantor is that he is “too establishment.” And there is a big lie, right there in the second paragraph. The biggest accusations are that he supports amnesty, and is being a two-faced liar about it. Aside from that he’s a squish on anything that matters. <<

If the "biggest accusation" is that he's pro-amnesty instead of just being part of the establishment, why weren't we hearing calls for Cantor's head on a platter back in 2007? George W. Bush was pushing for amnesty back then, and Cantor's record was nothing to write home about (voted in favor of rewarding illegal aliens from Mexico with Social Security benefits in 2004, voted against denying driver's licenses to illegal aliens in 2005, voted against the Tancredo amendment to end amnesty for illegals from central america in 2006, etc.)

I pointed out Cantor's record was meh at the time, but that didn't stop oodles of freepers from fawning over him because he's a "leader" and fantasizing about having him on a Presidential ticket.

See my comment upthread #37.

Brat leans more libertarian but he has a solid moral foundation. So far, he has not committed many major faux pas and his positions are consistent and to the right of Eric owned-and-operated-by-the-US-Chamber Cantor.

There is, in essence, no November election since the Dems failed to field a candidate by the deadline. THIS IS KEY to unseating Cantor. The argument that Cantor is the only one who can win against a Dem is OFF THE TABLE!! It’s crunch time and Cantor is vulnerable.

I don’t know. Anything is possible in the land where laws are followed by the whim of the ruling class.

The deadline to file was awhile ago (sorry, I don’t remember the exact date). It would be difficult for the dem party to put up a candidate at this point. Third party challenges are the wild card.

Cantor did have a challenger in 2010 and 2008. There has been a simmering discontent with him for a LONG time. I have been vocal about it. But the low-info voters believed that Cantor was ok and didn’t want to risk losing the seat to a dem.

The GOP machine in the 7th is strong and Cantor controlled it until this year. Cantor and his minions tried to slate in his home county and we stopped him dead in the water. I was there and it was EPIC. And two weeks later, Cantor’s handpicked minion to chair the 7th district republican committee got handed his ass. I cannot emphasize how important these two events are. It’s a bit inside baseball but it shows just how vulnerable Cantor is. The cracks are starting to show and the dam is about to burst.

IMHO, the stars are aligned to term limit Cantor this year. A strong articulate candidate and an irate grassroots with no dem candidate. Cantor is worried. I know that in my core. He will pull out all the stops from now until June 10th but momentum is on Brat’s side.

See my comment upthread #44.

Most libertarian-minded candidates believe in “free movement of people” and are MORE pro-open borders than mainstream conservatives (they’re against taxpayer funded goodies for illegals but have no problems with open borders otherwise), regardless of what they claim on the campaign trail to get elected.

Read about what happened to “true conservative” Jason Chaffetz after he defeated pro-amnesty congressmen Chris Cannon in Utah. Chaffetz presented himself as an “anti-amnesty” candidate and hammered the point home because that was the lone issue Cannon sucked on. Numerous freepers, including myself, rejoiced when Chaffetz won. Then he flip-flopped on amnesty and has voted to the LEFT of the guy he replaced. Chaffetz is another guy who was a former Dem that marketed himself as a solid tea party type to win a primary.

All I can say is Brat has been very consistent on his anti-amnesty stance. He’s against for economic reasons - downward pressure on wages, unemployment, utter devastation to entitlements. He has been a lifelong R so I don’t know that he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Yes, he could turn out to be a disappointment. But we are already fed up with Cantor. I am not convinced that Brat, even if he turned out to be a disappointment, would be any worse than the RINO we already have.

Haha "If". Well I'll say this, compared to Matt Bevin and Boner's "opponents" I guess Brat is a towering figure. I wish there was this much fever to to elect Bryan Smith over the increasingly moderate Mike Simpson in Idaho. But of course Simpson isn't the all important party leader and Smith had a real chance to win so it would be silly for me to expect anyone to be interested in that when playing Don Quixote is so much more fun. "Headhunting" party leaders with poorly funded unknown challengers, ignoring far less conservative and beatable douchebags like Simpson and Walter Jones, smart politics!

To be fair to Brat, his service on the "Joint Advisory Board of Economists" (they do economic forecasts supposedly non partisanly) while Kaine was Governor doesn't appear to be malicious.

He might be a Paulbot though.

>> the RINO we already have <<

I am not convinced Cantor is an evil leftist “RINO” (though his position on amnesty clearly sucks). I find it amusing that freepers used to worship both McConnell and Cantor as heroic conservative fighters for years, now you guys insist they’re both awful worthless RINO scum that MUST be defeated THIS election cycle no matter what. The “he’s a horrible RINO” argument would be more convincing if I didn’t see conservative activists fawn over Cantor for YEARS and fantasize about what an awesome U.S. Senator or Vice President he’d make (back when his record was nothing stellar, mind you, and I was telling the Eric Cantor fanboy there were much more impressive Virginia Congressmen Randy Forbes). When he announced he was running for Majority Leader, conservatives rejoiced, nobody said “oh no, we don’t want that guy, he’s a terrible pro-amnesty RINO”. And he had been in the house for a decade at that time (since 2001), I’m pretty sure someone would have noticed if he had a record of doing the Dems bidding by then.

Sadly, “meh at the time” was probably better than most of the leadership. Cantor used to sorta kinda stand up to the GOPe, right up until he became part of it. Now he’s no different than Lindsey or Thad or countless other two-faced squishes.

"William Murray was born in Maryland in May 1946, the son of William J. Murray, Jr. and Madalyn Murray O'Hair,[1] an atheist activist who came to national attention in 1960 when she filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court of the United States, claiming that compulsory prayer and reading of the Bible in public schools was unconstitutional. The Murrays' case, Murray v. Curlett, was ultimately folded into Abington School District v. Schempp, a landmark 1963 ruling which held mandatory Bible reading in public schools to be unconstitutional.

Throughout his life, Murray has worked in various industries in the private sector, including the airline industry.[2]

Murray became a Christian in 1980.

I'm aware of no such worship here. Name names and cite quotes or shut the heck up. I don't find it amusing that RINO supporters immediately reach for the lie to back their position. First thing, off the bat, that's what happens when you have no principles and all you support is the personal power and careers of crummy politicians.
